Defender hybrid/full electric??
Discussion
I understand full bev not possible for current defender. At the moment, the only production Land rovers that have that possibility are the full fat Range rover and the ranger rover sport - which have 33kWh usable battery now. Will have full electric models launched in 2024, I believe.
The next ones after that will apparently be evoque and discovery sport

Several years behind many others then and I've always been worried that it will be too little too late. The Enyak will three years old by that point. The next ones after that will apparently be evoque and discovery sport
I expect Evoque and DS will do well when they are eventually released though.

Indeed - a shame they are slow. Had a jag ipace and wanted to replace with a Land Rover plug in. The velar, rrs and rr did nothing for me with 2.0 engine and not very exciting range and this poor benefit in kind figures. Have a new range rover sport on offer but a full electric velar or discovery sport would have got my money if they existed I expect Evoque and DS will do well when they are eventually released though.
A larger petrol engine would, of course, be peachy, but no doubt doesn't tick the emissions boxes for the group.
As has been reported in road tests though, the 2.0 does a pretty good job as it generally always has some hybrid assistance. For what the car is, I have few complaints. Only if you put the EV mode into Save and try and press on through some backroads does it show itself as limited.
I have played around with pure EV, Hybrid and Save modes. Unsurprisingly, leaving it in Hybrid for any journey over 10/15 miles is the simplest of options and if you are doing regular 300 mile motorway trips, then this is not the powertrain for you.
Local trips though - glide away in EV. Home 7kW charger gets it back to 100% in around two hours. I regularly do a 50 mile trip into Edinburgh and it almost always has enough charge left to do the city part in EV. Plug it in and do the same going back.
