Evening All,

I am currently weighing up my options after my M140i insurance has doubled for no reason (mid 30's and 10+ years NCB so no reason for it) and considering getting something a bit bigger and awd due to where I live.

I have been offered a 2016 diesel Discovery Sport on 55k miles from a JLR main dealer but I am a little worried after reading all the scare stories about the engine and infotainment being unreliable. I am well aware the green oval isn't the pinnacle of reliability after my old TD5 disco, but is it a bad idea to consider a DS of this vintage or is the warranty pretty bulletproof like the BMW one is? Anyone know how much the warranties cost for a DS?

Isn't the reason for the insurance increase something to do with the amount that get stolen? https://www.babybmw.net/threads/stolen-white-bmw-m...

Is that the one fitted with the 2.2 Ford sourced diesel engine? That engine is considerably better than the later cars which had the JLR designed and built 2.0 Ingenium engine (No surprises there really)

DS at least lacks the complexities of air suspension and is generally one of the better JLR cars for reliability. Interior to me always looks a bit low rent though especially when compared to exec saloons for the same money.

Yes, expect the ICE to be a bit behind the times. JLR have only recently got their act together in that area after year of lagging behind everyone else. Don't think you get Android Auto in 2015/16, but don't quote me on that. Should at least have DAB and Bluetooth streaming though.

That would explain things, although living in Cumbria I can't imagine that the M140 are sought after cars!

This one I have been offered is a 2ltr Ingenium powered car, which makes me a little wary after reading the scare stories of them "blowing up" and balance shaft issues?

Is it possible to get carplay fitted to the older cars? It's all I use in my M140 and found it extremely useful in hire cars in the past, but I'm sure I could live with Bluetooth streaming at the very least.

Thanks for the replies smile

If one thing is certain, it’s always for a reason. Especially if it can’t be obtained cheaper from anyone.

I had a Black Edition HSE for about 12 months, a 2016 car. Well spec'd with the larger infotainment screen, heads up display etc. It was okay, fairly reliable, had an issue with a leaking rear light which caused a loom to fail resulting in the tailgate opening and closing randomly! Seemed thirsty for ad blue. Gearbox a bit slow/jumpy at junctions/round abouts.

Check it’s had the updates for oil dilution warnings on the instrument panel, and subsequent oil changes due to the oil dilution (due to the DPF being under the car, too cold and always needing soot burning regens with fuel). Can have EGR problems and clogged DPF also if it’s done a lot of short journeys with no opportunity to regen. Balance shaft failures possibly related to oil dilution too.

Larger widescreen system (no physical buttons) can be upgraded to latest version and then CarPlay, small screen (with buttons either side of screen) can’t.

Lovely cars, I had diesel and petrol (no oil dilution but not very economical) versions but I’d only pick a car which I was pretty certain of its history.

We have run a 180bhp Ingenium Disco Sport now for 4.5 yrs from new & have done 82k miles so we're hopefully well placed on reliability issues (company car btw).

Our car needs the Adblue filling up about every 5k miles. The car hasn't needed any oil between services (every 22k miles). We've had the odd rogue EML that's come on and gone off again on its own. We do a decent mix of motoring & get between 38-42 mpg from the car (manual gearbox) & up to 440 miles on a tank full.

The infotainment system is definitely a bit clunky/unappealing compared to Audi/Mercs of the same age IMO.

Whilst we've enjoyed the Disco Sport, a change of work circumstances means we've just bought a used XC60 D4 R-Line to replace it.

I ran a 2016 HSE luxury from new for about 2.5 years. As said well designed practical car.

Lots of niggling quality issues though. Squeaks and rattles were plenty. Speakers buzzing at moderate levels. Exhaust rattle when pulling away.
I had the oil dilution thing but didn’t realise what it was until car had gone. Dealership just kept sorting it out.

Wasn’t too bad economy wise but did seem to drink a lot of adblu.

Could be a good used buy though if issues have been addressed and a decent warranty.

Thanks for the info, especially the first hand experiences! The internet seems to be filled with people who have engines that are blowing up so much you would be surprised to see any Ingenium powered cars at all!

The car is a main dealer car, ticks all the boxes but it was quite lethargic when I put my foot down. I am aware the M140i may have spoilt me in regards to performance (and its a totally different class of vehicle) but I was surprised at how slow it actually was. Have any of you found your own cars to struggle at any point or is it my warped perspective of speed that is throwing me off?

I have had a 2016 Ingenium HSE Luxury for just over a year. My usage is very mixed - generally local journeys but with 2200 mile French holidays included.
Mine has a few option packs - 360 degree cameras, the only reliability issue I have had is the front camera having gone on the Fritz - main dealer has quoted £400 to repair. Electric tow hitch is useful for a rear bike rack (with the folding towbar I think you lose the spare wheel that is normally provided) Would like HUD.
There were lots of options available to be fitted - even to the top spec cars - some of which you may expect to be standard. As with BMWs, you need to spend time deciding on your ideal spec (when I was looking, online year-specific brochures were available from LR).
Stop start rarely kicks in (perhaps due to my usage).
The Ingenium has a smaller fuel tank than the Ford model (I think this is because of the Adblue tank) - frustrating on longer journeys. I see 38+mpg - acceptable to me. If you need to be ULEZ compliant (I don't), the later engine is your friend. Slightly lower road tax too.
9 speed auto seems to like hunting for the correct ratio on motorway inclines (why didn't they leave out a ratio - surely it wasn't to massage official fuel consumption figures?...)
I have the smaller screen - originally was hoping to find the bigger version, but I quite like the physical short cut buttons which aren't on the larger screen. Ancient tech.
Would prefer not to have 7 seats - yep, it's a mumsie car but I would like to have a deeper boot instead.
Frustrated that the sunroof doesn't open - I like the light it offers, but would also like some fresh air.
Wrap-under doors seem to be rare on cars, but I do not like smearing road crud from the sills on my trouser legs - other manufacturers should copy.
Bear in mind it is quite wide - I was in an old car park in Andover yesterday & the spaces were narrow - difficult to escape the car for me (powerfully built...).
21" wheels on an SUV, why? Give me the higher profile tyres from the lower spec cars & save my alloys from kerb & off-road (yes I actually do so in France) scrapes.
On the whole I like the car & it complements my ND MX-5 well.

We've just seen a friend whose got a 2017 Disco Sport 180 Ingenium....he recounted to us the timing chain had snapped on his 90k mile full LRSH car without warning. His local dealer wanted £13k for a new engine although LR stumped up £8k as a goodwill warranty gesture as his car was outside of the warranty. He'd also previously had the DPF fail but that was fixed during his warranty cover.

We decided not to buy out 4.5 Yr old company car when we had the chance recently even though it'd had been reliable...we ended up with a Volvo XC60 D4 AWD - more comfortable and more economical.
