D4 sweet spot?
Discussion
Looks like my 2010 D4 has been totalled and, while I'm considering other options, another D4 is very tempting. The only minor downsides of the last one were lack of Android auto or even Bluetooth streaming and not Euro6 so potential for issues with the crit'air ticket in France, plus LEZs in the UK.
However, we live in the sticks and do lots of short journeys. Anything up to an hour away will generally be single carriageway roads with roundabouts and/or traffic. So I'm very wary of DPF issues.

That's the billion dollar question. Do I avoid DPFs and suck up the occasional LEZ cost and (potentially more hassle) French travel restrictions or take the risk of DPF problems due to rural use.
So how much of an issue is 100 miles per week of short journeys with the occasional longer one and rarer trips on a motorway??

2012 D4 HSE. It’s got the 8 speed gearbox and twin turbos, but without DPFs or stop-start. I think this is the sweet spot. I’ve got one and it’s been totally reliable.
You sure no DPF, I have same year and pretty sure mine has, goes into growl mode when on a run.miniman said:

Same here. And it has Bluetooth audio streaming. Ours does a lot of short journeys (10 mile round trip for the daily school run), but I try to take it out at least once a week to stretch its legs.
Short journeys do murder diesel in these cars though.

Yes, although it’s inconclusive as to when they introduced DPFs. It was around early 2012. Mine’s registered Nov 2011, but is a 2012 model with rotary gear knob. Reason I know it has no DPF is helpfully says “non-DPF” on the plate riveted to the bonnet slam panel.
Cheers all. Is there a way to work out whether it has DPFs from a distance? And is it possible to remove factory tints? It's not a deal breaker but I'm not a fan.

Not from a distance... You'll have to stick your head underneath and look.Bill said:

I doubt it as IIRC the tinted glass is a different part number completely. ie: it's not a common piece of glass, with the tint applied.M

To the OP, the answer to this may help you determine if a car has DPF.
