hello,

9 months ago i bought a jaguar xjr, now i love this car,its the best car i had, and as i have two kids the jaguar gave the kids lots of room in the back, now my wife is pregs again, now i thought the jaguar is a big car and will be able to fit the third child in no problem, had a scan the other day, ITS TWINS!!! HA HA.

Now i have to sell my jaguar (im gutted about it, ha ha)
so now im looking at a discovery with 7 seats, around V reg or older, not sure what engine size to get?
can anyone give me any pointers about discoverys, what to look out for and whats the best one to get etc...

many thanks for your time,

mark

Suggest you buy the latest one that you can afford and make sure you get a decent warranty with it.

Mark,

I've got an XJR so I understand this is a hard decision but I've also got a Disco - don't do it!! Most unreliable piece of sh** I've ever owned, buy a Jap 4x4 if you want reliable family transport and buy a Defender if you wand some fun

Agree totally, We always thought they looked the part,
would fit everyone in dogs/kit/horse stuff,

Ours was a pristine 97' one owner from new, much better than than all the rest of the rejects we'd been shown for sale with loose trim/missing fixings/leaking windows,
Apparently held together with brummie spit!

I've been told since, that in hindsight, a later 2000 might've been more impressive,
but thats two LR products, not used off road, and not a patch on a lower maintainence Toyota product

I had a 2000 Disco and never had a problem. Brilliant car and would consider another.

The rear most seats are not that great but could be used. You will lose boot space when you do though.

I now have a Range Rover Classic and an Alhambra for carting the family about. It is great for that.
Fits seven in plus two prams and a travel cot

I'm on my 4th Land Rover and second Disco (2002 Td5 ES). Absolutely bloody cracking vehicles and I never intend to have anything else. Every time we try and downsize, we end up with something that's less reliable, less useable and much less comfortable than the LRs, so we change back.

Hmmm....I've read the comments with interest and it's not making my own dilemma any easier;

Thinking of buying a 2000/1 [or 02 if I'm lucky] Mercedes ML270 or a high spec diesel Discovery of about the same age.

It seems peoples experiences of the Discovery are either very good or very bad. The Merc has mixed views too...

Perhaps I ought to investigate the Japanese alternatives instead(??)

Mark,

Whatever you do - DO NOT BUY A DISCOVERY.

I have a Y reg V8 Disco and the main dealer is currently fitting its 4th engine. Yes, the 4th engine.

This is supposed to be a tried and trusted Rover V8, but somehow Land Rover have managed to it up. Last time the car was off the road for 12 weeks whilst they sourced a new engine. This time it's only taken them 3 weeks, but you have to ask WHY AM I ON MY 4TH ENGINE???

I'm about to swap it in for a Subaru Forester. A far wiser choice.

Buy a Toyota, buy an Isuzu, buy a Nissan. But - for the love of God - Do not even think about buying a Land Rover. If you do, don't say you've not been warned.

Tell you what! My Disco (TD5 ES) is coming up to 88k no major probs.... or minor probs either come to think of it.
Green laning up to the axles in muddy ruts yesterday.
Washed and spruced up for visiting big sister today.
Best thing since sliced bread.

My '97 range rover 4.0 SE is on 114,000 miles and never misses a beat. Best car i've ever owned. Having said that my sisters freelander is a pile of junk which eats head gaskets for breakfast, go figure...

Basically 2 engines, the TD5 and the 4.0 V8. TD5 gives better mpg but the V8 is super smooth and more powerful. V8 gulps petrol but you could always consider LPG.

Buying a disco is risky but could be rewarding. Get the Haynes book "you and your discovery" and learn your stuff before buying. Make sure its got FSH and watch out for towbars and any damage underneath- you dont want a car thats been pulling horses boxes out of muddy fields.

good luck
