‘I've lost £65k because no one turned on the anti-theft tracker on my Range Rover' - article in the telegraph I spotted.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/katie-investigat...

Paywall but you can get the gist - `consumer champion` chases it up & they're not getting it back via insurance!

Make sure you've got yours sorted!

I just read the full story in Katie Morley’s column in today’s Telegraph Money section.

Sad for the guy. Most petrolheads on PH would have made sure the tracker was activated but an easy mistake for a layperson. Losing a 65,000 car is a big price to pay.

ETA - I was going to post the same story in General Gassing. Surely this is worth a wider audience?

I read it as that she hadn't logged into the In Control app and set up her details.

I've used both the Volvo and Seat apps, and they've both been a royal PITA to get set up initially, it wouldn't surprise me if Land Rover's was the same.

This should really be done as part of the handover, so I do have some sympathy.

Apparently instructions for the setup were sent by email but went into a spam folder.

But why doesn't the dealership take 5 minutes to set everything up for the customer?

"Here's you new car, you'll need to download this app to your phone, now log in with your email address/id, is it working? Yes, now off you go and enjoy your car!"

Exactly. The purchaser claims that never happened and the salesman has left the supplying dealership. The dealership have offered £2500 in compensation.

Land Rover say ‘you were sent an email reminder early last year’. Did they or didn’t they? The purchaser seems to have no recollection of such an email. On balance yes they probably did send it but perhaps such an important reminder should have been sent by recorded delivery post.

Can somebody tell the story for those of us not subscribing to the DT please?

In short.

Man buys new Range Rover with tracker. He didn’t realise that the tracker had to be activated. The salesman had started the registration of the tracker but it was up to the purchaser to complete the subscription which he didn’t realise was necessary. The car was stolen and insurer refused to pay because the tracker wasn’t activated.

Why does it even need an app in the first place?

Thanks for that - so presumably when he took out the insurance policy he told the insurance company that a tracker was installed (knowing that it was fitted but not realising that it was inactive)?

Update - managed to get around the DT paywall and read the article. Seems it was all left to email once the customer had departed the showroom and despite having paid over £400 in additional fees for this tracker to be fitted the tracker company never did anything more than send a couple of emails out to remind him to activate the tracker (presumably knowing that there was a good chance that his insurance relied upon an operational tracker to be valid). Very unfortunate situation.

I read this article and it certainly put the wind up me. I've been trying to figure out whether my vehicle has a tracker and, if so. how do I subscribe and activate it?

It's a January 2018 RRS, I bought it from a main dealer in March this year. I've tried to register, but the InControl app doesn't recognise my VIN, so I can't get off first base with it.

I've also had a look at the Landrover pages for subscription information, but these imply that the service is only supported on vehicles up to four years. Is that correct, or have I misunderstood? Should I be able to activate the tracker on my vehicle? I will contact JLR again, but I would welcome any tips from the team here.

Have you declared to your insurance company that it's got a tracker fitted and/or was it a requirement ?

That's partly why the wind went up! I don't believe I have but I will be checking my policy very shortly. However, I would also be keen to get the tracker app activated and working if I can still do that on a 4+ year old car....

Just checked, and no I didn't declare a tracker so as far as the insurer is concerned the vehicle doesn't have one. My insurer does believe the vehicle has an immobiliser, which I presume it does,

Even as a buyer of a new LR it’s a pain to understand what is involved with the tracker system. Especially as there’s a 3rd party provider involved in there as well.

But to assume it just works somehow, and for free, shows at best a lack of curiosity on the part of the owner of something worth north of £60k imho.

Another poster said the person in the article paid £400 fees for it.

The fact the he paid £400 is the odd part - inasmuch as the tracker company took his money, sent out a couple of emails without response and never set up the service.

read the article on Saturday-my conclusion was that the active tracker was a condition of the insurance policy. As tracker not active insurance wouldn't pay out on theft of vehicle.
