Hiya,

I wanted some advice please, I want some upgrade spotlamps for my defender. I'm looking for 7 inch, and unsure whether to go for LED or bulbs, looking for round ones, and budget is £150 max per light. I've seen the hella compact 7 inch ones for just £54 on amazon, does anyone know if they'd be any good?

Thank you.

I've had some copies of KC 6" daylighter on my 'Rovers for about 20 years now using the driving pattern lense and 55W lamps - they give an excellent spread of light.

There are far better alternatives around now using LED technology - have a look on Google for auxiliary light comparistons, I am sure there is an Australian forum where they did some very scientific tests in real-world scenarios.

Do you want spot of flood lighting? I.e. is it for distance or a wide spread of light?

As for LED vs halogen. LED will pull far less amps which is generally good. But the colour temp (CRI) of many LEDs is pretty terrible, giving a murky blue white light, which bleeds out brown and green colours.

Halogen CRI is much better in this regard and will reduce eye strain and give much better colour rendition in non urban areas.

Something else I'd say to look out for, many of the LED units are massively over priced for their build quality. And are usually non user serviceable. Meaning should one stop working, your only option will be to buy another.

On the flip side a 'good' LED setup will emit far more light than the halogen ones.

The light bars are very good for mass flood lighting, but they all run small optics, so will have limited long distance range. If you want more of a spot beam, you'll generally need fewer LEDs and bigger reflector/optics.

It is possible to retro fit LED bulbs to halogen lamp housings, which can be a cheap option for an LED upgrade and may give you more choice on the CRI of the light too.

But well worth having a real good look around. Some of the cheaper LED lights will be more akin to running some fog lights with only very close up light.

Thanks for your replies.

Basically, it's my Dads car and he's overwhelmed by the choice of lights and passed the task over to me. He hasn't specified whether flood or distance - but he definitely wants round spots - and not light bars.

I don't have too much of an idea myself, I've been trying to research different spots for ages - I found some Cibie Oscars but Dad doesn't want chrome around the outside, he wants black.

And then the hella rallye 3000 - but those are too big to be fitted (8 inch)

So I finally found these (below) on amazon - and wondered are they too cheap to be true?

Hi,

I've decided on the hella laminator compact spot lights - but there are lots of model numbers and they are all priced differently.

And possibly some others.

Can anyone help please?
