Ive been tracking the price of my Discovery 5 for the last few months.

It was an insurance replacement delivered to me in April 2021.

Its a DISCOVERY DIESEL SW - 3.0 D300 R-Dynamic SE 5dr Auto

I got the following offers from webuyanycar

July 2021 - £54,830
November 2021 - £58,740
Feb 2022 - £65,890
March 2022 - £64,340
Today (29th march 2022) - £65,265

I'm god smacked, and it's almost like having an asset.

I've got over £30k equity in the car, and basically had 18 months of free motoring if I sell it now.

Cant understand why the offering prices are so high.

They are in high demand as new supplies are backed up due to the semi conductor shortages.

But to get an offer on a car which has done 11,000 miles for more than the current list price is mental.

I cant decide if I should hold onto it for longer, or let it go until all this mess dies down and prices come back down and pick another one up then.

What are you going to drive in the meantime?

As its mainly be used to take the kids to school, I was thinking of just picking up a Ford Kuga or something similar for £15k and pocket the cash.

How long does it take to get a new one? A colleague was recently quoted 11 months delivery for a new VW Touran!

The premium is to avoid waiting many months.

Before making your mind up whether to stick or twist: What are you hoping to move to?

If you're selling a car and don't intend to replace it then selling a near to the peak as possible makes sense (which is likely to be soon).

If you're buying electric, swap now. They will likely hold value more than ICE cars as we approach the late 2020s.

If you're buying a different class of car: is your Disco going to depreciate more or less than they are in the next few years? Not always an easy call to make...

How does your wife feel about it? hehe

I'd sell it, but then my Mrs has just told me not to bother sorting the central locking on her shed Mazda as it opens with the key. thumbup

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I sold not long ago for the same money I had purchased it for 2 years earlier. Same as my partners Smart car, 3 years free motoring essentially due to the used car prices being obscene at the moment.

I used the excess money to get some cheap lease cars from stock to get us through the mad period and hope I can get something I want next year.

The used car price inflation has also been exacerbated by the fact the new car prices have increased and the likes of Land Rover are no longer offering discount deals.

You’re now paying £56k for a base model disco with metallic paint. For the equivalent to yours (I guess without doing that much research into comparing spec) would be a metropolitan edition for £73k.

The bubble will burst but as other have said what would you drive in the meantime? A kuga will feel like a serious step down even for a non car enthusiast!

Collected my D300 SE R Dynamic in December after a 6 month wait...got a £5k discount when I ordered it also. Salesman mentioned that the wait time was almost 12 months in December and the discounts had dried up too looks like I was fortunate with the timing. Liking it alot so far after 3500 miles despite some cheap materials in some places (usually where you wouldn't look to be fair). Looking to keep for 4 years probably 5 so the jump in used values makes little difference to me.

Given what the OP says it's used for I'm not that convinced. Certainly not £10k+ saved convinced.

Same. Bought a new D300 R-Dynamic HSE for the wife last year. Supplying dealer rang me a couple of weeks ago and offered me £6k more than we paid with the added bonus of one owner and 6k+ miles on it. One good thing to come out of Covid I suppose

I've been told my 2015 LR DS has increased in value increased by £2,000 recently.

My wife has a Ford Fiesta Sport, 2010,15,000 miles, always garaged and serviced etc. Apparently, she can get around £5,500 for it today!

Signs of the times.

It makes sense at the moment to always have a car on order! Yeah he got two Defenders on order, spaced out five months apart. You can get into and out of a car for nothing at the moment - and make a profit if you plan wisely / are lucky. I’m aware it could well backfire but the dealer has even said that the deposit is refundable even if the car is delivered and I change my mind.

My wife is in the market for a newish car and quite fancy’s the current model Disco. Coming from a 2.0 diesel XF which despite all the warnings has been completely trouble free. Though on 80k mikes is starting to use a little oil. Assuming the Disco has a similar engine and gearbox how are current owners finding them, any horror stories or anything to look for?

There's only one way of finding out and let's face it, you can't do any worse than your current tally.

It also means you'll have a thread title relevant to the question you're asking, rather than attempting to hijack a thread on a completely different topic.
