Peter, you are best trawling thru all these pages to see similar threads.
I own a 2001 RR 4.0 HSE with all the upgrades and Overfinch brakes and suspension. It has been a real dream. Not one problem in 12 months ownership, this I fear is extremely unusual!
I believe we bought lucky but also wisely. The 4.6 runs hotter and tends to have the problems. So the 4.0 is the one to go for. I am the 2nd owner and believe the guy who bought the car from new did his homework. The interior has every option plus more, that the Vogue has, from wood upgrades, to Satnav upgrades.
The major things to look for are those that cost the most to fix namely the airsuspension upto £3000 (manufacturer expected lifetime is 5 years) and airconditioner unit @ £1500.
Buy a car which has clearly been looked after, the price variations are vast, if it is cheap, there will be a reason for it! A warranty is a must (about £900/yr). I bought from a small specialist car dealer, Landrover Dealers just stick huge mark ups on and you will be paying for a LR warranty @£1500.
Buying private is risky, these things are expensive to fix, so be careful.

Snazza,
I have had my 4.6 Vogue for about 3 months and it is a great car.
It has full service history and a warranty, and have only had a couple of minor problems so far.
Steve
PS:See PH classified for suitable cars & Autotrader.
I paid £22K for mine back in May,they have taken a huge hit since then & you can pick up a good car for a lot less tha that!!
