I was lucky to buy one of the very last FL2’s in early 2014, after 8 great years and 110k miles a growing family etc necessitates a change to something bigger with 7 seats but what?

I’d prefer to stay in an LR product, would have ordered new but for the lead times currently so a little stumped.

Disco Sport which I’ve been in a few times seems somewhat smaller and not a real 7 seater? I also know a local estate who replaced a fleet of FL2s with these and hate them for a variety of reasons.

Would appreciate suggestions, reliability and a warranty are two big must haves !

BEP,

Interesting you have one of the last FL2s. By contrast, I have one of the very first DS. Like the FL2 it has the 2.2 Ford engine.

Also interesting that you feel the DS is smaller than the FL2. A good mate has a FL2 Metropolitan and he and his wife always say my DS is larger inside. My neighbour changed from a FL2 to a DS because there was more room for his dogs!

My DS was a LR main dealer demo and loan car when I acquired it. It's fully spec'd which is nice. Now done about 48000 miles with relatively little trouble. It has the 7 seat capability which I only use when taking visiting family to the pub, beach etc. With the 7 seats in use, the load space is tiny.

Sounds to me that you need a full Disco.

The only true 7 seater is a discovery 5.

DS, and even the new 110 are 5+2 so can use the back seats for occasional use but I wouldn’t stick someone in them all the time.

A friend had a 2005 Disco 3, had it for years then got a 2015 RRS a couple of years ago.
Less space than the D3 and he has changed to a DS HSE last summer and says the DS is more spacious.

As an owner of a 2014 Freelander, I would be surprised that a DS is smaller inside given how tiny I feel the freeby is.

Interesting… we have a 2014 FL2 that we’ve owned from new and also decided we needed a 7 seater.

I looked at the Disco Sport a couple of years ago but didn’t go for it, the +2 seats are really only for small children or short trips in my opinion. Recently test drove a Q7 but my wife wasn’t overly impressed. I’ve just bought a 2017 Discovery 5, obviously feels bigger than the Freelander but it’s a true 7 seater, has a wonderful spec (HSE + some extras) and has a huge boot with the seats down. My wife has driven it and said “you can tell this is a much better car than the Audi” - not quite sure how she justified that statement but I have to agree it’s an awesome car.

Only had it a week, I’m averaging pretty much the same MPG as the FL2 which is reasonable.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers for the replies everyone

I think with Discovery Sport it could be the driving position, it feels more car than the Freelander so thus not as 4x4 perhaps.

As it happens I’ve spotted a 2017 Discovery locally which I’m off to see, prices are punchy as I suppose anything is currently but it does seem to tick most boxes.

I would go for last of the Discovery 4s from 2016. As you say get a warranty but even that might not cover the engine if the engine goes pop.

The D4 is probably one of the best vehicles that LR will ever make. Genuine 7 seater, great cruiser and very comfortable too.

Personally I don't think the boot on the FL2 is very big at all. The boot is pretty small and the suspension turrets take up most of it! ALso, its a small car for an SUV these days especially when you compare it to cars like the Santa Fe. However at least the 2.2 engine wasn't made by Land Rover, so probably a better bet than LR's own Ingenium 4cyl found in the D5 and DS.

Disco 4 HSE / Landmark, with a warranty that covers the crank. And set aside a bit for the wishbones and centre propshaft UJ if they haven’t been done. Fabulous car.

Replaced my beloved Discovery 2 with a 2014 Freelander 2 4 years ago. Its been brilliant although do miss the bigger boot. Head over ruled heart and I didn't buy the Discovery 4 i really fancied. I don't see me having another landrover to replace it though. DS is not doing it for me, over priced and under reliable. Everything else in the range is even more over priced. A 4x4 estate like a skoda superb might be my next move?
