Dont buy a FFRR they said, it'll be a nightmare they said.

So I bought one anyway - 2010 TDV8 in bronze, with 100k miles.

That was a year ago, and since then I've covered a massive 4k miles hehe and all I've had to do is put a new battery in, as the previous one failed whenever it was cold. Other than that nothing but checking the fluids every now and then and putting diesel in, lots of diesel. Mostly its short journeys around town, but still been faultless.

Until now.

Last week I pulled out onto the road and accelerated harder than normal up the hill, and noticed a lot of smoke out the back, thought this was just cold-start over-fuelling as it was cold that day, and it hasn't happened before or since.

Then on Tuesday I pulled out and accelerated, not that hard to be honest, and within seconds noticed a lack of engine noise - no instant warning lights, but after a couple of hundred yards got a "Restricted Performance" message, and the car basically rolled to a stop about 0.5 miles from home. It started again, but very rough with an idle speed of about 3-400 rpm, then it stopped. Tried again, same thing, engine caught, rough idle, stopped.

Got it recovered home by the AA, and now it wont even start - it turns over, but wont catch.

Basic OBD check isn't showing any codes.

Any ideas where I should start checking - battery is fine, there's 1/4 tank of diesel in it.

Diagnostics using LR specific diagnostic tool.

Or try a LR specific forum such as www.fullfatrr.com/forum/ or the RR section in www.landyzone.co.uk/forum/

Yep, get it onto a 'proper' fault code reader and see if it has picked up anything.

The 3.6 TDV8 is a cracking motor but induction problems are not unknown... Especially with the turbos. Annoyingly, faults in this area often don't throw ECU fault codes either coz as far as the ECU is concerned, everything is working.

With that in mind, if there's nothing on the fault reader, I'd probably start looking around the induction area. Start with the simple/cheap stuff, all the hoses for splits, air filter, intercooler, etc.

Next, I'd be wanting to confirm fuel is getting to the injectors, as the thing should at least be firing, even without the turbo spinning... But problems in that area should be picked up by the ECU, so that's where the 'fun' starts!!

IF it is failed turbos, you can sometimes bend a rod or 2. Check out some of the more Range Rover specific forums. You'll get a lot more input there.

I ran a TDV8 a few years back at about the mileage you have and beyond.

The closest I had to the symptons you describe was when one of the EGR valves had lost it head so it wasn't sealing properly. Mine would at least run but it was lumpy, lots of black smoke and very poor/rough running.

Took the garage some time to find the root cuase as no error codes were being thrown. The valve (a cheap chinese copy that had been fitted by a previous owner) was operating , it was moving back and forth as desigmed, but the physical head had snapped off meaning it actually wasn't doing anything usefull.

Bullet proof engine, it's just the bits that get bolted on to it that don't last so well, EGRs, turbos, alternator, etc... smile
