The image of the newer ones always jarred with me a little, but I must say the new one looks terrific - 911 like tweaking (instead of wholescale changes) has worked wonders, elegant and unfussy.

Only niggle is the up to 23" rims.

23" inches!

Is there no end to this fashion-led vulgarity : (

Of course, they now start by designing the bodywork to suit monstrous wheels from the outset, so it all looks relatively in proportion.

However, it’s still a case of the design tail wagging the design dog. A car should not be designed around its wheels, especially when the said size is neither beneficial nor necessary.

Imagine trying to wrestle with a 23" rim if you're elderly or a small female when changing a puncture. I presume it will get a spare?

That apart, it’s an elegant vehicle.

Though I’d be much more drawn to one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsGU5_AIf7o

You don't have to buy the 23" wheel.

He made it clear he knew it was an option.
One of his points was that the car is designed for massive wheels so it looks odd with anything else.

Seems daft to complain about something you don't have to have. Might as well complain about not liking the white paint option when you were only ever going to spec a silver.
Still, if that's the only concern I'm sure the salesperson will be able to process his order without too much trouble. Just don't tick the option that says 23" wheels because it sounds like such a mistake would be a complete travesty.

Do you think these people would handle 21” 4x4 wheels more easily? Or even be able to jack up a FFRR in the first place?

I’d wager very few owners would change any wheel themselves on one of these and instead call AA/RAC.

I'd imagine if you could afford to run one you will just get your man to pop your spare car over and he will get it fixed for you.

Quite! I changed a 20” wheel on a Disco 4 on a cold, dark, rainy night and, to be honest, I’d rather have waited an hour for LR assist to come and do it.

Even on a good day ‘just’ a 20” wheel is beyond most people - going up to 23” really isn’t going to make any difference. Those who always would have still will. The rest will just call the AA like they always have.

Oh, and yes, I like the new RR. Of course, all the enthusiasts who love their classics, P38s and L322s are complaining about how it’s not a RR and how LR have lost their way…..

Says who? I wasted a very pleasant hour or so with the online configuration tool and very quickly came to the conclusion that it looks best on 21" wheels.

23” wheels are fine if thats what the car has been designed for. Chances are the overall rolling diameter has been increased to suit, its not a simple case of lower profile tyres thar will pop on every pot hole

I always thought the 22" wheels on my first L405 were too big, and I much prefer the 21" ones on my current L405.

23" just feels ridiculous, but I have also been trying to figure our what I should do when it comes to speccing the new RR. I really want to see the new car with smaller wheels - the cars I have seen are all on the launch 23"s.

My L405 had 22s and had a pulley system to enable the spare to be hoisted out of the nether regions of the boot.

You have to be fairly strong to heave the things about at all, let alone offer them up to the studs and vice versa.
