Hi,

First post ever so please be kind.

Just bought my wife a 64 plate Range Rover sport. It has the automatic gear stick (no not the circular one) and when we put it in gear or park when stationary it has a quiet grinding/ gear changing audible noise. Is this normal. I mentioned it to the main dealer who sold me the car and they said it is what they do. Is this correct? It is not affecting the cars performance just have a noise when putting into gear when stationary.

Thanks for reading and hopefully putting my mind at rest.

Firstly welcome. Let’s see a picture.
Mines a 64 plate HSE Dynamic 3.0 SDV6 (Red SPORT badge). I’ve had it since May and don’t recognise the noise which you have described as normal. Mines on 45k miles. Mine tends to be in P or D. Mine has the flappy paddles which I don’t use much because basically I’m crap with them and the gearbox in auto makes a better job than me.

It only makes the noise when I put it into gear or park. It is not a loud noise and I only noticed it when I was in a quiet garage.

When I had my 16 Rangie a couple of years ago it was totally silent, no noise at all the the gear shift or transmission.

If it is a sound which lasts for no more than a second, it is probably the electric handbrake being engaged and disengaged. This is more audible in a PHEV, if that is what you have, because of the silence of the power unit when stationary.

I have just taken delivery of a new defender (Has the exact same 'gear lever', this also makes a noise, it is NOT the handbrake, that can be clearly heard outside the car.

On the defender, the 'gear lever' is in the middle of the dash, the noise clearly comes from the lever itself, like a solenoid and small motor 'whirring' for half a second, its just part of the way the mechanism operates, it can only be heard if the engine is very quiet (or off) and you select P or D etc.

Easier to spot the noise on the defender, since the lever is well away from the gearbox area.
