Hi guys, I have a 2004 L322. We took the car into a garage that turned out to be a big mistake!
We sent it in for a new turbo and wheel bearing. On the day i picked it up I knew something wasn't right so pulled onto my drive and left it for my husband to look at.
Long story short the car would only engage 1st gear, even neutral and reverse engaged first gear. We tried manually change but with the same result. The car ended up being two inches away from the front of my house.
We called out the "mechanic" and he managed to get it into neutral, we pushed it off the drive and he drove it back to his garage in first gear (no it won't shift up)
We had a call off the guy informing us it needs a new gear box but we have no trust in him at all. We've tried collecting the car from his workshop to take it to a professional but it basically starts and won't engage any gear.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Is it as sever as a gearbox or could it be something small? Any advice would be very much appreciated
Sorry for rambling rolleyes
TIA

The symptoms you are describing suggest the gearbox is goosed, so pointless thinking the mechanic is to blame.

L322s are known for their s%&$e gearboxes so your mechanic is probably right. Appreciate that this isn't what you wanted to hear. Budget about £2k if its a full rebuild.

Don't know where you are in the country, but Roy at Planet Gears in Peterborough has an excellent reputation along with Bristol Transmissions. However this is a Land Rover, so there will be specialists all round the country who can get a L322 box in and out and refurbish.

Hi, thank you for the response and advice.
I'm not blaming the mechanic for just this incident. The reason I'm so annoyed with the guy is we take two of our cars to him and guaranteed almost every time we collect there is something else wrong that wasn't there before. I know this Range Rover is very unreliable and has a reputation for being just that but we also have an Australian VXR8. We sent it into him for an MOT. It failed on emissions, sensors needing resetting and handbrake not engaging fully.
We asked him to get the work done, I won't go into all of the details but instead of resetting the sensors he put black electrical tape over the LED display so the MOT garage wouldn't see them, I'll skip the emissions bit.
Basically I sent in a mint Vxr8 that we bought with 2,000 miles on the clock. I collected the car with electrical tape covering dials, no electric windows or wing mirrors (that were working perfectly before), the entire center console taken apart and shoved into in the side pockets with the handbrake workings on show as he'd "had to order a new one from Australian " ( never arrived). The guy left sharp screws on the leather seats! The engine thats always been sound has started surging and after driving it for just 15 minutes it broke down for the first time in 12 years. It was recovered by the AA and remains broken down on my drive. He was the only person to have touched it, same with the Range Rover. Thats remains broken down on a side Street in Cannock! So its not a single incident I'm blaming him for. I'm furious at myself for sending our cars to someone that clearly shouldn't be working on them. May just be a coincidence but we now know he's up and left the garage. We're not the only ones left like this!

Anyway, as I say thank you for the advice.

He wouldn't get anywhere near either car again, if our lives were dependent on it!
