Why the commas on enthusiasts?
I can't buy Jap, I worked too long for them in the automotive sector both here and in Asia. Horrible engineering on dull cars. OK, this is an opportunity for a list of innovative and exciting jap boxes to be trotted out. Cool, fill your boots, I'm pleased for you. They just don't fly my flag.
Run along and have fun now. Its been nice talking to you.

A hilux has been famously drowned/dropped crashed all over Bristol and generally abused on top gear for all to see, and still ran.
now I'll be delighted to see a defender make that same claim or indeed make it to Bristol, without mishap and the intervention of the fourth emergency service.
The build quality of the late lamented brummies efforts, was nothing if not often exiting from an operators point of view. however when you grow out of the whole LR brand. you may join the class mate
I understand from your profile that you have a number of issues to negotiate first

Rich, if you aren't a Landrover fan - why post on this forum? Not into trolling by any chance are you?

chin chin!
Yawn, interesting Rich. Funnily enough the last car to let me down and stop me getting home was a Nissan comany car. None of my Landrovers have failed to get me home.
But then if you're the sort of chap who doesn't bother with maintenance I guess you'll get problems.
I guess it all depends upon your expectations and experiences. I have only owned two cars; a 1957 88” Series One in which I covered 90,000 miles in 9 years and now a 100” 3.9 V8 Bowler that I have covered about 60,000 miles in 6 years. The Series One was far from trouble free, but that was due to a lack of maintenance by previous owners. The Bowler (I built it) has had an excellent reliability record – only once did it fail to get me to my destination and that was because of a fuel pump from a faulty batch (the spare I carried was duff too).
I have travelled to the Pyrenees and back in a 1970’s 101 and a 1972 Range Rover, both times towing an off-road race car and carrying the spares, tools and camping gear. The team got there and back in one piece – no drama.
My point? I could probably have done any of these things in a Jap machine but:
1. Would the trips have been as memorable? No.
2. Would they have been as cheap to maintain? I think not.
As far as cars go I drove a Renault Espace a while back – one trip to Nuneaton and back and a 100% failure rate’; the clutch stopped working.
As I said at the beginning “I guess it all depends upon your expectations and experiences”
