It came on Goodyear Ultragrip winter tyres, which I've been perfectly happy with. But I live in the south, there's little prospect of driving to the Alps anytime soon and they're expensive and not always easy to get hold of.

So what would you suggest for mostly country roads, occasional towing in mud and the vague prospect of snow, maybe?

FWIW - I'm a fan of running 2x sets... I'll typically swap to the winters in Oct and then swap back in April.

Had Pirelli scorpions on mine. Seemed fine and lasted over 20k miles without getting near worn out

Grabber AT3's for winter set (19's) and Pirrelli Scorpions for summer (20's). Top class both!

Pirelli scorpion or scorpion verde by far the best we have had on any of our discoveries or Range Rovers.

wear a bit faster but the grip is way better as well as, i felt, an imrovement in steering feel. They are pretty decent off road too. i say this having done getting on for 350k miles in various LR cars.

I've settled on Pirelli Scorpian's on pondering this recent question on my Discovery. I'm in a Hertfordshire hamlet and do similar driving to you.

Not long had my Disco but a bloody good car.

Brilliant, thanks all. The Scorpions look like the solution but it's hard to be sure without a bit of feedback from users.

Would suggest keeping your Goodyear winters in storage and as summer tyre run set of Michelin PS4 SUV tyres. Have found these to be excellent both in dry & wet conditions and much better braking and handling vs the more all season standard fit options from Pirelli. Wear is very good on the Mich too and likely you'd get a good few years out of rotating the GY winters and Mich summers.

Thanks, I got the Pirellis. The winters were completely shot anyway. I might get a set of winters once the prospect of an alpine holiday seems more likely.

ETA I'd also be concerned that the PS4s would leave me stuck in the parking for the village fete! wink

Winter tyres aren't just for Alpine conditions...

Winter tyres make a big difference and are typically designed for use in cold & damp conditions, where the ambient temperatures are below circa 8C. This is pretty much exactly what we have in the UK between Oct/Nov & Apr.

Not so much of an issue here in the south coast, and summer tyre performance doesn't drop off a cliff at 8°c although IME that does depend on the tyre.
