I was looking to buy a 2018 Range Rover Sport 3.0 HSE Petrol but they seem fairly uncommon.

Looking around where I live in London the majority of RRS are now P400E, however I have no drive to charge and there are no charge points near me. The car is used daily for family duties so don't have the time to drive somewhere and sit while I recharge.

So the question is can the regenerative charge on the car be enough if used daily. I don't want to lugging around a useless battery.

Cheers

On a very good day. I get about 30mpg on a long run including motorway driving. Scooting around town (not London) it’s low to mid 20’s.

I get very high teens out of my 5.0ltr supercharged around town and low 20s on a run. biggrin

Edit: it's also ULEZ compliant.

That’s pretty good given the size of the vehicle! My previous 3 cars were all V8’s but just shy of a ton lighter than the RRS and they all got those figures!

The 4 pot P300 engine is a bit rough tbh and clearly it has to work hard to shift 2.5t around.

Unless you’re doing it for tax advantage then steer clear of the hybrid if you can’t charge it. Mine is great on battery which is 75% of my usage as I live in the suburbs and have a short commute through town. It’s silent, very smooth and means I hardly ever have to visit the petrol station.

It’s also fine on longer motorway trips, although not very efficient. You don’t really hear the engine when cruising and it’s never lacking in power, even at higher speeds. The downside is at a decent cruising speed it’ll do sub 25mpg.

Where it’s crap is around town with no battery. You can then hear the 2l petrol engine working hard and there’s sometimes a slight delay pulling away as the battery and engine swap with each other. In all honesty if I was never going to charge it I’d buy the V6 or V8.

edited to answer your original question - it doesn't 'regen' at all, it needs plugging in to add charge to the battery. The only charge it adds when driving around is enough to make sure you've got the full 400bhp available if you floor it and to pull away on electric power up to about 5mph when the engine cuts back in, basically a glorified start stop system. You can force it to regen by putting it in sand/gravel mode(?) when driving, but I tried this once and the economy went down to something like 16mpg, so I wouldn't recommend it. Also makes the car feel weird as it's an off road mode.

Yep, I suspect the significant weight saving over my previous L320 is the major factor in the better mileage.

As long as you're not a complete flat foot and are willing to embrace the rather abrupt "Stop Start", it provides acceptable mpg in day to day use.

Others might not agree and perhaps will think it is shockingly poor mpg, but we all have different priorities.
