Just picked up this D300 R-Dynamic HSE for the wife. Pre-reg with 10 miles on the clock, £8k off so happy days. A few nice little extras over the normal HSE spec so more than happy. We tend to keep our Discos for about 7 or 8 years so hoping this will be as good as our old 4. The old girl is off to her new owners soon for more adventures, a wee bit sad to see her go.

Had mine (D300 HSE) since March, the engine has been by far & away a revelation! The MHEV allows it to get off the mark like a stabbed rat, then hustle along like something half it's weight, yet still return 35-40MPG. 3000k miles on the clock so far and I'm very impressed.

Does the MHEV actually give any ‘thrust’? As I understood it it just provided the ability to coast with the engine off when you’re not pressing the throttle.

In any case, my Dad has the D300 in a RRS and you’re right, it’s a cracking engine. Sounds very nice indeed. Let’s hope they made the crank out of metal this time!

Edit: Just to add, both me and my brother have the 300bhp 2.0 petrol and reckon we’d be neck and neck with a D300 when giving it the beans. I’ll still go for the D300 next time though.

Yes, the MHEV harvests and stores the energy generated during deceleration, then provides it through "torque assist" when accelerating. In essence it plugs the holes left by the ICE.

First chance to have a proper drive in it this morning. Pleasantly surprised, so far this engine seems like a perfect match for the car. Was tempted with a P360 but didn't have a chance to test drive either. The D300 seems to be everything the car needs. Was a bit unsure about the wife choosing Byron blue also but it really pops in the sun cool

I really do like the update, it looks very smart. My MY20 has been…..troublesome…..standard Land Rover stuff really, but I’m not sure I can face another three years of niggles, glitches and annoying faults. Fantastic cars, badly put together with the cheapest materials.

(No doubt I’ll end up with another - number four.)

Yep, just worked it out and this is our 5th. 1st was a 300TDI when I was about 20. We've always had one on the drive in one guise or another. I actually was thinking about a LWB RR this time around but the wife still wanted the 7 seats. Her dad's not too well and has given up driving so it was either another Disco or take 2 cars. Think she made the right call though

Just noticed the McLaren hiding at the back! What a perfect pairing! (Minus the Merc, that’s spoiling it…. biggrin)

Haha, I agree. We call it the 'pool' car

Not wishing to sound rude but that's wishful thinking.

A 2.0 4-pot petrol can't compete with a 3.0 6-pot Diesel, at the best of times, due to the toque needed to get the weight moving which a diesel gives. So put a 6-pot 3.0 diesel MHEV torque boosted variant in and a P300 wouldn't see the D300 for dust. smile

Weeeeell, I have a D300 RRS with the inline 6 and MHEV sat on my drive at the moment so that’s a reasonable comparison the the D300 Disco, no? They’re honestly very similar, but then they’ve both got 300bhp and the four-pot has a weight advantage. The 0-60 numbers also suggest they’re neck and neck, both being about 7 seconds.

Don’t get me wrong, I prefer the diesel by quite a margin, but the P300 is really no slouch! You just have to work it more, which it’s happy to do! I had a P400 RRS on loan for a few days as well; now that shifts!

PS. Fuel economy is horrific; I average about 17mpg.

Not in my experience and I'm surprised you think that. I had a P300 whilst I was waiting for mine to arrive (it was delayed by 2 weeks, in which time I'd sold my car so the dealer let me borrow one from their forecourt), and the thing was pretty gutless where it mattered (these cars are built for long distance and/or loaded journeys). Put your foot down at anything above 50mph and.... nothing. No feeling of power whatsoever, just the fuel tank emptying itself quicker than Corona-D flying in through UK borders. I had the 306hp SDV6 in my old RRS and that felt more rapid, but the D300 MHEV also plugs the holes in the old powertrain to really help shift things along. Stick your foot down in the D300 at any speed and you get immediate power. Hp figures are pretty meaningless in a 2.3tonne car, it's torque that counts and the P300 has 400nm whereas the D300 has 650NM, with as I previously mentioned the MHEV torque power fill distribution.

All IMO of course. smile

Nice colour looks great in the sunshine! I'm close to ordering the R Dynamic D300 MHeV as a replacement for my Q7 so glad to hear the engine has plenty of thrust. Not sure whether to go Carpathian Grey or PortoFino blue! Best I've been offered so far is £5500 off so you did well to get £8k! Will try a little more chiseling as I have a test drive in one tomorrow.

Here my Carpathian grey - photo is a bit bright, but it is a lovely colour.

D300 MHEV spec is a great choice - when I first got it I was surprised at the speed it got away from the line at.

Be aware that lead times are horrific on them right now due to the semi-conductor shortage. Cars that were in build have been stopped and delays are piling back through, which in turn is driving up used values and reducing discounts. If you order now be prepared not to get anything until the end of the year at the very earliest. Some dealers are quoting January 2022 onwards.

I got £8k off my brand new order back in December last year, but looking at DTD and other brokers that level of discount has dropped significantly (to around £5k) due to the problems.

It’s always been the way with diesel cars; 1.9TDIs used to feel fast because of the surge of torque, but the speed didn’t build in a linear fashion - and hardly built at all in most of them!

But you’re right, these cars are built for load-lugging and lazy driving and the small petrol definitely isn’t as well suited to that. But when you work it, especially with the paddles, it moves quick enough. It certainly requires a different driving style to the big diesel, though (but I’m happy wringing out a petrol engine) and I know a lot of people don’t like to thrash an engine - not sure my wife will ever have had it above 4000rpm!

I just wish it wasn’t plagued with fault after fault after fault! It’s a proper Land Rover mine! biggrin

Anyway, good luck to the OP, I’ll look to replace mine in a year and the Disco D300 or P360 will be top of my list.

This cheered me up. Suddenly the 17.4mpg that I get out of my L322 and its 4.2 litre supercharged V8 seems pretty good!

Yep I was suprised by the wait times but my dealer mentioned October /November rather than into 2022! Leaning towards the SE rather than HSE as will add on the few bits I want separately...thought about the Windsor leather but with three young boys the harder wearing grain probably the sensible choice! The R Dynamic styling really gives the car some extra presence.

Does the SE have memory seats? That was always a killer when trying to spec cars previously as you couldn’t put memory seats on an SE. Whenever I’ve tried building Defenders or Discos there’s always been some small but important feature that I need that always means I need the HSE / Lux.

Was quite disappointed to find a few standard features on the old HSE/HSE Lux are now additional or, worse, not available at all.

Yes memory seats standard on new SE...think the Windsor leather, electric third row, cooled front seats and matrix lights main differences between the HSE and SE...can do without all of those except maybe the matrix lights.
