Is it worth upgrading to a facelift L405?
Discussion
Hello,
I bought a nearly new 13 plate Vogue SE in 2014 and then traded it for another nearly new 66 plate Vogue SE in 2017.
As such I’ve been thinking about making the same move again though maybe going for an autobiography this time, say a 19 or 20 plate with up to 15k miles.
I’ve noticed the cost to change is much more than last time though (last time I paid about £25k to change). They will only pay £30k for my car, so it’s going to be about £40k-£50k to move to a facelift. Is this a stupid idea given my 66 plate Vogue SE is running perfectly?
We have a 2k mile family road trip planned this summer, from U.K. to France to Spain and back, so if it makes sense to upgrade then I’d aim to do it before that so we can enjoy the new vehicle.
Let me know what you recommend.

Are you sure your car is worth £30k trade in.
Some L405s aren’t far off that now.
That’s what the main dealer said they’d pay - it’s a 66 plate Vogue SE, 70k miles, with the black pack, 22” turbine wheels, sliding roof, lots of options so it’s a pretty popular spec. Some L405s aren’t far off that now.
Very well taken care of at LR and have their warranty but due to be 5 years old this year and will hit 80k miles by end of year so about the right time to change IME. But half tempted to just keep running it until the new model comes out in 2022/2023 and keep the £50k in my pocket for now if the facelift is not massively different to what I’ve got.
The new one will undoubtedly be lovely and I’m sure will be on the forecourt by this time next year. I rather suspect that it will be going upscale a bit, so the price is likely to be higher. Your cost of change will be quite different at that point albeit offset by decent depreciation if you get an early car. Of course, getting an early one may be a challenge unless you order now/have a decent dealer relationship.
I have a facelift SDV8 Autobiography and it is a lovely, and better, car but the differences - other than better Tech’ aren’t necessarily profound. Depends on how many miles you’ll pile on before you can get into the new car I suspect.

I think I was lowballed last year by my local dealer with a low £30s offer for my 2015 L405 Autobio with 35k miles!
Mind you it was during a pandemic and I wasn’t buying anything.
Good luck. They are good cars imho, especially if you have experience with RR ownership.
Thanks for the comments that’s very helpful. So based on all that I think my best plan is to keep the current one and add the saved depreciation over the next year or so to the pot and get a brand new L460. Have already registered my interest with local dealer and will place a deposit as soon as they’ll take one.

...could also depend upon which engine you have? If the V6 then the V8’s are a notable difference.
Good point, my 13 plate L405 was an SDV8 diesel, very nice. The 66 plate L405 is a SDV6 diesel. Not quite as special or as nice a vehicle but is a more reliable engine based on my experience, I had a number of issues with the V8 but don’t know if that’s because it was an early car, so went for the V6 this time around. We do lots of small trips around town during the week which it may not have liked. A V8 petrol would be lovely, also interested to test the P400e at some point.I was considering similar for the past few months and ended up going with a 67 plate late pre facelift. The touch screen climate control and the touch sensitive steering wheel buttons were not to my liking.
I'd also feel like the facelift will drop like a stone when the new one is released.

Facelift doesn’t have exclusively touchscreen climate control (it has large, rather lovely multi-functional knobs as well) and the steering wheel controls aren’t purely touch sensitive either. I actually think the facelift tech is much nicer although the new pivipro stuff is far better again.

The ones at the bottom of the touchscreen? Compared to the other contact points they feel cheap and, on mine at least, there’s a slight panel flex when you push them. It sounds like a small thing but I use them frequently (for seat heating/cooling) and they’re probably the thing I dislike most about the vehicle. Arguably it speaks to how good the rest of the car is but they could have been better executed. Yes a run out car can be a solid purchase, I spoke to the dealer again and apparently the L460 has been pushed back a year, they think it won’t be announced until mid/late 2022 - still not taking deposits here anyway.
I’d love to buy a brand new one either way, L460 ideally to get the most change for the money I’m putting in, but see what price they come out at.
