FFRR Insurance - LV no longer offering quotations
Discussion
Received a note from LV yesterday which looks like they have decided not to continue insuring the S/C FFRR:
They insure a number of other expensive/high performance vehicles for me, and were great when I had to make a no fault claim, so it was a shame to get this. My bigger concern is whether this is an isolated action by just one insurer or whether others are ceasing to cover them so wondered if anyone else has experienced similar (and whether it only affects the supercharged)?

Thank you for choosing to insure your LANDROVER RANGE ROVER AUTOBIOGRAPHY V8 525 AUTO with LV= over the past year.
We’re writing to you to let you know that, unfortunately, we’ve had to make some changes to our underwriting approach for your vehicle type.
Over the past few years, there’s been a rise in thefts of the LANDROVER RANGE ROVER AUTOBIOGRAPHY V8 525 AUTO, which you may have read about in the press. As a result, we’ve seen a large increase in the number and cost of claims we’ve received for these types of vehicles and have made the difficult decision to stop insuring them.
This means at your next renewal date on xx xxxx 2021, we won’t be able to offer you a renewal price for this car. We will send a letter confirming this again in advance of your renewal date, the letter will explain that this is due to a change in our underwriting criteria. Please rest assured this won’t be classed as your insurance being declined, so you won’t need to declare it to other insurers.
I could understand them declining to cover the old ones with known keyless theft issues, but post facelift (which mine is) these were supposed to have been resolved, so it comes as quite a surprise that it seems to be irrespective of age. You'd hope that there would be some dialogue between major insurers and the car makers so their team should be aware of the changes. If they are, then I can't help but question whether the issues were fixed or if keyless theft remains a problem. I was told that it was the model, apparently one of several they’re no longer going to offer cover for (they didn’t say what they were).
It’s a really clear decision from them and, whilst they claim their underwriters constantly review, isn’t up for individual negotiation.
Personally, I think it’s a problem for Land Rover if a major insurer views their cars as uninsurable even when they’ve supposedly fixed the keyless issues and they come as standard with trackers.

It's more of a problem for current owners. When the word gets round that you can't get insurance then you have an unsalable and unusable car Worth posting this link here:

TLDR: Guy buys Range Rover, insurance doesn't auto renew as he thinks because company are no longer insuring Range Rovers, car is stolen. A sorry tale.

I can't read that thread as it's more annoying than most PistonHeads threads - did you select auto-renew? did you report it to police? etc https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/62...

Insurer is on iffy ground if all they did was send an email. Hence LV= taking care to write to polciyholders in advance.

Agree completely. Lots of posturing and blaming on there. The OP really needs proper legal advice on that one.Insurer is on iffy ground if all they did was send an email. Hence LV= taking care to write to polciyholders in advance.

Poor sod still owes £65k on it as well
Bloody hell!I've always wondered what would happen in these circumstances.
For example you take out a PCP for a very expensive car - technically owe £xx,xxx on it - and if it's stolen and you somehow fudge the insurance - are you still on the hook for the GFV?

GFV is irrelevant, you’re on the hook for all the outstanding finance.I've always wondered what would happen in these circumstances.

Hence if a car is written off at 2 years old on a PCP your payout often won’t cover the finance settlement and you have to top up the payment to the finance company personally (or buy GAP to help).

I keep nipping back to the thread in the hope they at least found the car but its probably in a shipping container somewhere in the Atlantic now poor sod.
Yep, horrendous. I'm going over my insurance docs and tracker now - only currently using the LR one that comes with the car - is it advisable to get a third party one installed? My insurer Admiral are fine with the LR one as far as i am aware... Ghost immobiliser could be an option too...
I do however religiously keep both keys in a faraday box (sounds like it was taken via keyless theft)

If it’s a newish one it shouldn’t be necessary... well, it never should have been necessary anyway, but with the facelift LR was supposed to have addressed the security side of things. LV were fine with the standard one (it is thatcham approved I believe). Tbh, personally I would get rid if I had to mess around with multiple immobilisers on a daily driver. I’ve spoken to LV and can get no clarity on whether they have taken any facelift changes into account or have simply treated the L405 as one model (which would seem like quite lazy underwriting if LR did indeed address the issues and the theft profile is meaningfully lower).

Of course there are other ways of stealing them - same as used to happen before keyless existed. We were warned off getting an X5 some years ago as they were being car-jacked around Manchester regularly and after the second time a business colleagues RS4 was taken off him at knife-point he decided to not to replace it. BMW stopped fitting biometric entry on cars in APAC after thieves chopped off an owners finger! If all else fails they'll lift them onto the back of a truck.

All valid points, but however they’re taken the latest FFRRs have trackers. I’ve always fancied an RS6 Avant but the theft profile has always been what’s put me off. If all else fails they'll lift them onto the back of a truck.
Bit early to start looking for new quotes but hoping it ends up being easy to replace cover as I’d bought outright intending to keep for a long time and there are no other 4x4s that deliver what I want.
Had this problem with insuring a Yamaha T Max 530, a big fast scooter.
The moped gangs in London were finding them very useful for their business on the streets.
Only one company were offering cover and wacking up the prices every year. Became unaffordable for me and I'm in my late 50s.
Couldn't sell the bloody thing because of this. In the end I had to let it go for a fraction of it's supposed value to a chap who then tried to insure it after he paid me.
His premium was £3500, not far off what he'd paid me for the bike.
He rode off uninsured.
Makes me think that many cars and bikes in London are uninsured.

Same, never fancied a fast audi or golf r etc as that's really put me off. FWIW i had an RS6 for a few months and sold it - didn't do it for me at all. Very disappointed with LV, just got the renewal through.
As expected they have dropped the FFRR from their renewal offers.
What is unexpected is that although they’re still prepared to cover my Defender they’re no longer mirroring the NCD I had accrued (both were previously on a multi-car policy). Has the effect of changing from £900/yr for the pair to more than £800 for just the Defender!
Got a month to sort it all out but it’s created a need for rather more juggling than expected as I now need to shop around for quotes for two vehicles instead of one.
