I’ve just looked up my 2014 Defender on the Bath/Government websites to check I don’t have to pay the Bath Clean Air Zone (CAZ) charge, as it doesn’t apply to private cars.

To my surprise (horror) it’s listed as a van and consequently I do apparently have to pay!

It’s a standard 90 with side windows and 4 seats (from new) with a 2.2L Diesel engine. Always used as a private car. On my V5 it’s listed as Light 4x4 Utility and Light Goods Vehicle.

Is the CAZ classification of my ‘car’ correct? Are all (old style) Defenders considered to be vans for emissions purposes, even if they have side windows and rear seats? If not, can I get the DVLA to reclassify mine as a car?

I'm sure there was a court case bright over a Land-Rover which was "speeding" when caught exceeding the 30mph l limit then Inn place for commercial vehicles. The court found that the Land-Rover was a dual purpose vehicle and therefore exempt.

Hi there!

Did you manage to change your V5 or are you being charged £9? We are desperate to buy a 90 but just discovered that we will be charged in the Bath CAZ zone as we live inside. We see loads of the Defenders about - is everyone paying or is there an exemption???

Just seen this, sorry!

I haven’t tried to change the V5 I’m afraid. Instead I just go into Bath less often, and when I do, take my other car.

Your post is a good prompt though; maybe I will try to get that V5 changed…
