Hi Guys-

is there a good forum for Dicovery 5's?

I'm looking into getting one, but struggling to clarify a few points:

1) the 2.0 vs. 3.0 in terms of real world usage (i wont be towing much - just slinging bikes on the back and heading for the hills) - is the 2.0 really underpowered? of just a bit less smooth?

2) the facelift/digital dash models (trying to see when these crossed over - have seen some '67 plates with the virtual cockpit and some '18 plates without for the same trim level confused)

basically - when did it go from this:

to this:

and what is that actually called on the spec?

3) The main differences betwixt HSE & HSE lux spec? from what i can see, its the rear entertainment system, windsor leather & ambient cabin lights - otherwise seems like some HSE are pretty much specced to Lux level anyway - which makes comparisons from car to car a bit of a forensic job!

cheers guys - any other advice and pointers most welcome -

my current preference is for this one, and i think i'm going to try to crack a deal in the next few days! thumbup

nice one!

We have the 2.0, 17 plate, 43k , lasted 5 weeks before the engine shat itself, LR had no problem putting a new engine in but I think the engine is too small for the car. It is economical though.

We could not stretch to a 3.0, but if we had had the budget, it would be my choice

pretty much when i'm at -

I dont want it to be 'fast', but if its sluggish...

I'm coming out of a 4.0 petrol nissan pathfinder - which was pretty rapid for a huge truck

on paper they're about the same - which would be fine thumbup

When I worked for them, I ran two different 2.0d models and did about 50k miles between them. I often used to tow 3T of trailer with it too. Perfectly good engine, plenty of torque, and I averaged 36mpg over those miles with mine.

They can sound a little coarse when accelerating hard from a standstill, but personally, I think the engine is a good choice in the Discovery 5. The new vehicle cost uplift to the 3.0d was never particularly large from memory, though not sure what the used market price gap is like.

Regarding the steering wheel control differences, I think that came in around March 2019 for 20MY. The digital cockpit was an option, though might have become standard on HSE Lux around 2018.

Martin.

thanks - that explains the disparity

some seem to have the display, some the display and the iphone-esque buttons on the wheel -

do you know if these were seperately optioned?

The move from 'physical press' to 'touch sensitive' buttons was a one time, cross trim level switch - I think at 20MY, though I had left JLR by then, so going from memory. This was not optional.

The digital dash was certainly an option to start with, but as I say, I think it became standard on higher trim levels around 2018. I had a 2017 HSE Lux with analogue dials, but my 2018 had the digital display. The digital display is nice, and being able to have Nav guidance on the dash whilst Phone is on the infotainment display, for example, was a nice feature. I spent a lot of driving time on phone calls unfortunately.

A few extra observations that may help, though these are all form memory - not certainty. Main addition on Lux over HSE was rear seat entertainment. RSE was a lovely gimmick initially for the kids, but in practice, the technology is very old compared to how we consume media in the rest of life. Resolution of the screens was acceptable, but comparatively poor, and really could only play DVDs simply. My kids quickly found that iPad was a better solution.

I also seem to recall that the opening panoramic sunroof might have been a part of Lux, and it was a fixed glass roof on lower trim levels. Personally, I absolutely loved that opening roof. Personal choice of course.

Martin.

Thats great info thanks -

funny how stuff like the (rear seat entertainment) quickly dates - i guess it would be easier to get something more modern, and then integrate it..

this HSE is well priced for a low mile 68 plate - i guess the colour combo may detract slightly from mainstream appeal, but personally, i really like it.

anything you can see to go against it?

Looks a lovely example to me, with a high spec. Adaptive cruise, lo-range gearbox, and digital dash might have been options on that example, and the Meridian Hi-Fi and updated infotainment are very worthwhile things to have. I always chose the light interiors on mine, and whilst admittedly I only kept the cars for c. 12 months and 30k miles, they were very heard wearing and child proof.

The only (other than RSE) things that you might get extra on a Lux (based on the memories of mine), and I cannot tell from the advert if this car has them, are cooled front seats, fridge in front central arm-rest, and electric operation of 2nd/3rd row seat folding.

Enjoy the car. I loved mine, first SUVs I had, and they converted me to the benefits of having them as family cars.

As it is close to 3 years old, it is likely to be coming to the expiry of the InControl feature set - phone app controlled things like remote engine start, remote climate, stolen vehicle tracking etc. Might be worth trying to negotiate renewal into the deal.

Martin.
