Good morning

I’m looking at buying the above as our new family car. Initially, I was looking at used examples, but having got some price indications from places like Carwow, there doesn’t appear to be much in it, and buying new gets us the spec we want.

I’ve done a fair amount of research but not driven one yet due to Covid. Some reviews suggest the diesel engine is better suited, and the petrol isn’t especially powerful performance wise nor very efficient, despite the mild hybrid. However, petrol is the only option we’d look at mainly due to mileage and we’re after a comfortable cruiser.

I’ve looked at the competitors and, whilst some appear to have better petrol engines, it’s the DS that really ticks the boxes for us in terms of space and set up. And the off capabilities are an attraction to us which we intend to use.

I’ve long wanted a Defender and love the new one. I’m a fan of the Discovery too. But the DS is better suited to our needs, both size wise and budget wise.

Does anyone have experience of the P250 and, if so, any comments, good or bad?

Thank you for reading smile

We've had a 2019 (pre MHEV) 240 petrol from new and 24.000 miles as our family car.

The engine is fine for the car. It's no sports car, but up to 60mph it you won't find it lacking, and even though it needs revs to perform it doesn't sound strained.
Economy is predictably poor around town, but 24-29mpg on a run.

I chose a factory order, as I wanted Adaptive Suspension as it makes a big difference to the feel of the car in dynamic mode (both the suspension and gearshift). I don't have experience of the facelift MHEV car, which has uspension chages.

Nearly three years on there's not another car I'd choose over it for our needs, and I was going to replace it this year, but I think we'll keep it.

The Land Rover mechanic who came out to put a software update on mine said the MHEV system was pretty much glorified stop-start so don't expect too much efficiency improvements due to that. He also said that unless you are doing regular 20 minute journeys at a constant speed to clear to DPF the petrol is the better option, infact after plugging it in and seeing it was a petrol engine he said "Oh good, you've gone for the petrol so I don't have to give you the lecture about taking it out for a run every week" hehe
I went for the P200 and that is lacking a bit of power up hills sometimes, but 99% of the time it's perfectly fine and I don't feel I'm slower than the traffic around me or anything like that. For me it was a case of getting all the options I wanted (pano roof, cameras, upgraded speakers) in budget won over going for a bit more oomph.
If you get one make sure you take them up on the offroading day, it's great fun.

Great, many thanks both. Most appreciated.

I believe the facelift is a bit unusual (for a facelift) in that the underpinnings are changed and based on the latest Evoque platform, rather than just cosmetic tweaks and more standard equipment/options. Good to know about the suspension side of things on the pre-facelift one. I’m struggling a bit with not going OTT with the options and narrowing it down to must haves rather than the ones I just want - which is most of them hehe

Good to hear about the power too. The current family car is pretty gutless and I suspect this will be more than adequate. And yes, I fully intend to experience the off roading invitation, assuming it’s still an option post-lockdown.

Hope to find a helpful dealer now and explore options. There’s nothing else that quite ticks as many boxes for us as this though (on paper at least), which is never a good position to be in when negotiating!

Fingers crossed we will secure one in the coming weeks.

Thank you again smile
