RRS MY15 - Battery Replacement
Discussion
Depending on spec (stop/start etc) you might have one or two batteries. The main one lives buried in the bottom of the spare wheel well under the air compressor, the aux one is behind the trim panel in the right hand side of the boot.
Upon replacement it is recommended that the car's Battery Monitoring System is reset/recalibrated so the new battery is given the correct amount of charging from the alternator. (The BMS adjusts the alternator's output to account for the battery aging) This is done via an appropriate plug-in diagnostic tool.

Excellent timing!
My 2015 RR sport is still on its original battery, struggling its nuts off to start in the recent cold snap.
I've just ordered a replacement main battery for under the compressor however whilst it should still start & run I believe that the battery has to have some sort of programming to the vehicle to avoid issues with fault lights or similar?
Any info on that please guys?
What do Land Rover dealers typically charge to sort that for a self fitted battery?

Swapped the new battery in about 20mins.
Absolutely no issues whatsoever with no warning lights or issues at all, it even remembered my iPhone & seat settings.
What a result as the dealers wanted £180 alone just for programming the new battery to the car that they told me would need doing!

It does need doing. It's not programming the battery to the car, it's telling the car's Battery Monitoring System that the car has a new and healthy battery. Absolutely no issues whatsoever with no warning lights or issues at all, it even remembered my iPhone & seat settings.

Up until now, your BMS will have adjusted the output of the alternator to protect the aging battery by not overcharging it. Its present state could mean your new battery is not getting sufficient charge.
It's not a scam or witchcraft, it's a real thing but it is also something you can do at home if you are in possession of a suitable diagnostic tool.
Ive replaced the battery in the Disco 4 2014 model after the battery failed to start the car. We were getting battery low warning for a few weeks then the cold weather killed it. I swapped it out and the low battery warning persisted for a few days but it has now sorted itself out and the start stop is now working. It did freak me out as that hasn't worked for about a year
Anyway i did read about the BMS but resetting isn't mentioned in the manual and it does state you can take the battery out and recharge separately etc. so i would assume that the system is a bit smarter and can determine the battery state etc. the car is going in for a service in May so I'll ask the question then.

Interesting to hear, however I'm going to wing it & see what happens.
Hopefully worst case it won't charge it enough to enable the stop start to work (it is working at the moment) saving me the bother of turning it off every Time I get in the car!
The battery monitoring will still assume you have the old battery and will "task the alternator to charge higher" Hopefully worst case it won't charge it enough to enable the stop start to work (it is working at the moment) saving me the bother of turning it off every Time I get in the car!
However it will eventually learn what to do but it takes ages but as its winter you might get away with it but you "could" shorten your new batteries life .
