Hi
Firstly excuse me as I am not an experienced poster!
I have had some interesting cars and am lucky enough to have a 2011 Defender 90 which is particularly clean and has had some subtle modifications to it, including :
18” Twisted alloys, remap, exhaust, inter cooler, Old Man Emu suspension and some creature comforts.
My mileage is pretty low, 4K a year. My problem is the 285 65 18 BF Goodrich tyres are seven years old and beginning to show some cracking. I have also noticed wet weather grip, particularly whilst breaking is getting interesting, or scary, I assume this is down to the rubber getting harder?!
What do I replace them with? The BFG look the best but are pricey. Are they the best all round tyre for grip in dry and wet on tarmac? The car rarely goes off road!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Off topic, but I hope you have declared the mods to the insurance company?

I've read in a few different places that BFG tyres use quite hard rubber. Maybe that accounts for their longevity.

Are the tyre pressures correct?

Assuming they are maybe look at using a less aggressive pattern?

I've got Grabber TR on my 110" and can't fault them for tarmac and trail use.

Hi
Thank you for your reply. I’ll take a look
Pressures are all good, plenty of tread but beginning to deteriorate and crack

What do you use the vehicle for? And what type of tyres do you have now (i.e. tread).

Best bet is just to punch the size in on a tyre website and see what takes your fancy really.

I’d recommend the Pirelli AT plus for more road use.

Have them on my Disco 4, good all round tyre really, good on wet road also.
Not as aggressive as the BFG AT though handle them self fine off-road, as you say you seldom go off-road so might be worth a shout.

Saying that if you do limit millage and your wanting to retain the aggressive looks of the original BFGs I’d go same again, the newer BFG AT are bit of improvement compared to the older one in terms of road handling as before.

Thank you I will take a look at those with my local tyre shop.
My head is telling me the cost of the BFG’s are just too much!
I buy premium tyres but feel this is big money compared to performance tyres

Well depending on what you do, the performance can be just as key. Lots of brands however. As said above, it really depends on your intended use and driving style.

+1 for the Pirelli AT plus - good on road performance and won't let you down if the surface is a bit gnarly.
