My son is looking at buying an early-ish L320 RRS (budget probably £7k max) and has asked me for advice about the available engines. Much as I know my way around the L322 FFRR, I'm not familiar with what engines you can get with the RRS and more importantly which are the good ones and which are the ones to avoid, if any? I have it in my head that the Discovery 3 diesels had a penchant for eating EGR valves (or something like that?) and possibly turbos as well?

Anything else?

TIA.

TDV8 or Supercharged

  • TDV8 only came as the 3.6 in the RRS and an absolute peach of an engine. It first appeared in 2007 but the sweet spot is the facelift, as they only fitted the TDV8 in the facelift until 2011.
  • Supercharged has been available from the start, initially with the 4.2 and then the 5.0 from 10MY.
  • 4.4V8 NA Petrol - This engine was available from the start but dropped in the European markets from late 2006.
TDV8s were only available as a minimum of HSE spec, Brembo brakes, active ARBs, so all are well appointed.

Otherwise, you've got the 2.7TDV6, 3.0TDV6 & 3.0SDV6, which are the same as the Disco 3&4.

Body lift is needed to change diesel turbos. 4.4 n/a petrol is bmw, 4.2 petrol supercharged is Jaguar.

I think you're getting your wires crossed there... In the RRSport, the 4.4 NA & 4.2 SC are both Jaguar engines.

As for a body lift, does it matter? A decent workshop can do it in under 2hrs, so it'll always be a trade off, as once the body is lifted, access is really easy.

Body lift will put off the home mechanic. As for the 4.4 n/a engine, I can’t remember seeing one of those being built in the production facility I work in

Am I right in thinking that it is/was the TDV6s which had issues? And are therefore better avoided?

Yeah, the TDV6 (& SDV6) have the well documented 'issues'.

TDV8 has a timing chain, as opposed to the TDV6 timing belt

Common fault on the TDV8 is a leaky thermostat housing

Other than that, the usual suspension bush wear..

Didn’t the V6’s have a crank snapping issue?
