Range Rover (L405) buying guide?
Discussion
I'm thinking about a used L405 Range Rover but would be new to brand so unsure what to look out for. No PH Buying guide yet so would welcome any hint and tips on model year changes, engine choices, trim level. Anything essential to look out for, and anything that I really need to avoid.
Are they generally reliable? Is it worth paying a premium to purchase an 'approved used' car or is a decent Indy a better bet. If the latter, who is good to deal with?
Budget is quite flexible, would be coming from a long line of the usual German suspects.
If there is a decent buying guide anywhere, please point me in the right direction.
Many thanks yo anyone who can spare a moment to reply.

I bought one 2mths ago....went through a similar process of working out what to go for.
They drop a huge amount of cash in depreciation so decide what your happy with. They are also huge in size, parking can be difficult.
I bought a SDV8, get 34mpg and really happy with it. Engine is meant to be pretty solid whereas there have been issues with the SDV6.
There was a small update I think around 2018, tell tale signs are the different exhausts plus another screen in the console.
Three models, Vogue, VogueSE and the Autobiography. I went middle, mine was well optioned with 22inch wheels ....heated seats in the rear, fridge, etc etc
I bought an SDV8, VogueSE, 66plate, 20k mls for £45k from Staffs LR. 4yrs old and came with a service/mot plus 12mths warranty. These cars need a service every 12mths. Also got through the post a half day experience in any of the 4x4centres which should be fun.
Lots of information here

The Buyer’s Guide for any Land Rover product is very concise.
It comprises one word: “Don’t”.
You sound slightly biased and you must have your reasons. It comprises one word: “Don’t”.
Not explaining that does not help the OP with his decisions.
Everyone has their own experiences, likes and dislikes of cars so I can't see where you were very helpful?
2018 update shouldn't be underestimated. New seats, wider with controls on the door, new exterior lights and styling, new infotainment and improved quality across many places.
As above FFRR has a buying guide.
My questions back to you would be how used, and what type of spec?
Because a 6 year old, 2+ owner, Vogue, fully blacked out is a different proposition to 2 year old, 1 owner, Blue or green AB.
As above FFRR has a buying guide.

My thinking would be something 2 - 4 years old with c. 30k on the clock. As above FFRR has a buying guide.

Wouldn't be going down the gangster spec route...
I'm unsure of engine never mind spec. I would prefer a diesel and understand there are 6 and 8 cylinder engines, probably the 6 cylinder as I won't be towing anything. Is the TDV6 very different to the SDV6?
Spec wise, does a Vogue SE have everything you really need?
Does colour make a difference to resale?
I had the SDV6 in the Discovery....its fine. There are a few broken crank issues if you google that. The SDV8 is a far nicer drive and similar mpg....euro6 also.
2yr old RR is roughly £65-70k against £40-55k for a 4yr old one. Could well be dropping £1k a month depreciation on the newer ones. Prices are all over the place dependng on spec/colour etc.
How long are you looking to keep it for ?
Not sure what VogueSE has as standard but I've never had a fridge before ! soft close doors, auto boot, heated rear seats, reclining rear seats.....loaded. Mine has the pan roof but it doesn't open....think that is an option or std on the Autobiography.

Pop to the shops later and see if there are deals on senses of humour....would do you good. Not explaining that does not help the OP with his decisions.

Post was tongue in cheek, hence the winking emoji followed by the get me coat emoji....the clues are pretty clear.
ETA: oh and see if the pet shop has any Parrots in stock...

Just completed my third year with a v6 se. Bought at 2 years old and with 30k ish miles. Engine is great, uses no oil each year and reliably gives 33mpg and only £265 for road tax. No issues so far..
Main dealer was ok to buy from but I have run RRs since 1987 and the main dealer service has steadily got worse. Have used an Indy for years who is great and good value.
I think the first reply commented on the inconvenience of the size of the current model. I would agree. Vs the L322 it is sometimes difficult to park, but that said I really like it. Enjoy!

What type of driving do you do - that will determine the engine. TDV6 is probably fine (275hp), though in the RRS this is 300. Wouldn't be going down the gangster spec route...

VSE has everything you need. AB has toys and the luxury - adds a suede headliner, improve seats in the front and back (massage, heated and cooled, lots of recline) four zones climate and a few other bits. I would seek out one with extendable sidesteps.
The AB, if it has exec seats, makes the boot space a bit smaller, but its not noticeable, same with the p400e - raises the boot floor a bit. Means you can't have the official dog cage.
Re: colour, depends when you are selling it and who to, I would suggest pick the one you are happiest with.
1k per month depreciation is about right. Try to get a post 2018 facelift.
ETA: reliability - electrics will crap out with regularity, car (except consumables/suspension) is bulletproof. Also, they are far better as a package than anything out there.
