Prospective Velar advice please (Or F-Pace?)
Discussion
Hi all,
My wife currently has a 64 plate Evoque Dynamic which we’ve owned since new. Its done 62k now and has been pretty much faultless over the 6 years of running it.
However, she is often needing a little more space, the Evoque is quite pocket sized, and the only SUV she like over the Evoque is the Velar.
This would be a used/nearly new purchase – likely a year old.
Are there any genuine inherent problems with them (I’m not looking for a stay away from LR thread), what engine is recommended and what are the must have options on these?
At present we have the upgraded extended leather in red/black, pan roof, heated screen & wheel etc – are there any packs we should look out for that would give us the majority of sensible options without having to look for them individually?
How have you found the vehicle to live with?
Alternatively anyone know how it compares with an F-Pace? Guessing a Velar will hold value much better but is an F-Pace as premium?

Wife had a mk1 Evoque , we traded in for a Velar and I have an F-Pace SVR
The SVR is a great car with a great ride and handling compromise and the interior is dressed up to be quite nice but the lower models are a bit austere if you ask me, they also tend to have a lot of roll rock/head toss.
The wife’s Velar is a D300 HSE Dynamic we bought as an ex JLR managers car, 7 months old with about 7000 miles. It’s a lovely car, great refinement and rolling comfort, rides very well but is still precise enough.
Generally it feels like a shrunk down proper Range Rover whereas even though the mk2 Evoques are a nice and refined car they still have a bit of the feel of a poshed up smaller car IMHO.
Generally the luxury feel of the Velar is also a significant step up on the Jag (even a high spec one like mine) and unless you’re going brand new where both have the Pivi pro the two screen interface in the Velar feels a lot more modern and intuitive
That said, while the boot is significantly bigger in the Velar it doesn’t feel like a massively larger car inside than an Evoque and the Jag has fractionally better leg room for some reason (although that could just be mine with the thinner backed sports seats).
The D300 engine is fine, quiet and smooth enough if not eye wateringly fast. Unless you’re particularly frustrated by a slow car (like me) then I would buy a car on the spec you want rather than engine.
Personally I think the air suspension is worthwhile, the setup is a bit more cohesive than the coil sprung version.
Pano roof is nice, although again I’d be wary of having it on the coil sprung version though as JLR often increase rear spring rates to compensate for the higher centre of gravity and it hurts the ride.
In terms of issues, I had the amplifier fail on the Jag after a couple of months taking out the entire sound system (which I’ve heard is a common fault on both) and it had a paint defect but otherwise both cars have been fine so far.
JLR dealers are hit and miss to say the least but subjectively I’ve found a greater proportion of the Land Rover dealers actually make an effort, even on shared forecourts for some reason. Helpful Jag dealers do exist and I’ve found a good one now but I’ve had some pretty crap experiences. At least the Land Rover ones have been apologetic if they’ve cocked something up.

What did you decide in the end, OP? My wife is having a similar debate with herself at the moment, seen an FPace and Velar for sale that both look perfect, but she can't decide between them.My wife currently has a 64 plate Evoque Dynamic which we’ve owned since new. It'll be a Velar of some variety, though likely next year now. My wife runs her own hair salon and yet another lockdown and no income. We're going to wait till the world returns to something resembling normality once again My wife's daily car has been a Velar for a little over 3 years now. We bought the car from Lloyd Ripon as the launch demo vehicle so it was fully loaded. Its not skipped a beat in the time we've had it, to date its done 55,000 miles.
Build quality is very good, its a nice place to be. The infotainment system prior to the 2019 update could be glitchy but not so since then. Ours is a D300 HSE Dynamic and its surprisingly sprightly and nimble for a big car. We had an issue with the callipers corroding but LR replaced them under warranty. no problems otherwise.
We had a look at the f-pace before we bought it and it felt a good few levels of quality below the velar. There is also the added plus point that it isn't an RRS.
