Hi,
Thinking of buying one, good or bad idea?
100k miles Buck Blue and cream leather, drives nicely no noises but will it drive me mad?
Thanks

yes it will probably drive you mad, break down a lot, be quite costly to run but it will also be the best car you have ever had and will make you want no other.

A friend of mine has a new model sport, it broke down twice in the first week, the courtesy car broke down in the second week, her car broke down again after about week four and she was about to insert thew car into an orifice belonging to the dealer.

12 months + onwards, the car is running fine and she loves it to bits. They are fantastic cars and if you go into it with an idea of what may well happen, you are likely to still put up with its 'character'.

I'll be buying one next year when I have a bit more spare cash to make sure it stays roadworthy.

On my third, first one was 122k miles Vogue, fantastic place to be. Faults, limited to rear camera failed and sat nav forgot where it was occasionally, sold after 2 years with about another 30k miles. Second one a sport, bought with 55k miles, run to 75k miles, faults limited to front lower wishbones bushes, changed wishbones. 1 rear suspension sensor (£95).

Great cars, struggling to think of a replacement

At that mileage the main potential expensive pitfalls are the Turbos and EGRs.

The engine itself is bullet proof, it's all the bits bolted to it that struggle. smile

Best advice I'd have (having run a TDV8 3.6 for a few years from about 90k to 120k miles), is have a war chest of funds available for if(when) it goes wrong.

And find yourself a decent specialist or local garage that's competent to work on it.

And never go near a JLR dealer!!! smile

Remember these are not cheap cars new and JLR have been ramping up the parts prices over the last few years, so being able to find alternative non JLR parts will save you a fortune!

P.S. you will love the car, and will become besotted, unless you get a real lemon. smile

Well I used to own a TDV8 too.
But bought it new in 2007 and have kept it for 18 months.
Not sure I’m the best person to give you advice on whether to buy one second hand 13 years on.
Had several Range Rovers, never had a problem, the TDV8 Vogue replaced a P38 4.6 HSE and that was faultless too after about 100,000 miles.
Lots complaining about those, I might have been lucky but I think service history is key.

My mrs has had a 3.6tdv8 Autobiography for the past 5yrs. Previous was a TD6 Autobiography for 5yrs too.

I can honestly say we have had very little issues with either model. The worst was a split air bag to the o/s front suspension. This happened within 2 weeks of owning the TD6, so was replaced under warranty.
The tdv8 has only had consumables replaced, apart from an inter cooler hose, which cost £55 to replace at the LR Indy we use. Found they cost £20 and could have done it myself.
Works out to a combined 100-120k relatively trouble free miles over 10yrs.

As the tdv8 has 105k on it and is a MY10, we are considering replacing it, but are finding it difficult to agree on a different car of similar build and spec. I like the Merc GLE43 or 63, she likes the Velar. We both like the RR Sport and would have another Full fat all day long. I just can’t justify spending over 35k on a depreciating car, when we have a car each, plus a van on the drive.

I bought my 2010 TDV8 2 years ago, bought the nicest and lowest mileage one I could find. This was pre ULEZ and I had to pay £17k back then for a nice 60k miles car in a lovely colour scheme (ipanema sand over brown leather).

I took it to Rovertune and had them go through the car and fix everything. That cost £4k. In my head I simply adjusted the purchase price to £21k.

I've since done around 10k miles in it including trips to the Alps, Wales, 4-up with 2 dogs, 4 bikes and a roof box. I absolutely love it, its like a Bentley on stilts. They do take constant maintenance to be at their best but they are simply magnificent and the only thing I would want to replace it with would be another L322 Vogue, maybe a 4.4 TDV8 with the 8 speed box and better range, or maybe go the other way and spring for a 5.0 petrol V8 supercharged if one came along.

My car is now probably worth about £10k but I don't care, they are very special and a true high point of luxury car design.

Great cars but there is always something.

I went for the cheapest 4.4 tdv8 I could find and then found it had a new box and engine. I’ve since spent around 4K fixing things which were overdue but I have a vibration that nobody can (a) replicate and (b) find anything wrong. Doing my head, ruining the experience. Secondly had a bad experience at a really reputable indie who didn’t do the service I paid for..

Ran a tdv8 3.6 for 6 years with very few problems. Great car. Liked it more than my current L405. More settled and relaxing ride and much smaller and easier to place on the road and park!
