I’ve managed to whack my front near side wheel on a boulder in my Range Rover Sport, scraping the wheel itself and taking a chunk out of the tyre, revealing the carcass inside, so I need to get the wheel refurbed, and replace the tyre.

I assume that I need to replace both fronts at the same time, but is it necessary or desirable to replace all four?

There’s about 5mm tread all round, so while not new, the current tyres are also not needing replacement otherwise.

It'll be fine, as most cars. The only 4x4 we have had that seemed pernickity about this was an X3.

Shouldn't be an issue replacing a single tyre so long as you end up with the same tyre as the front offside. We had a BMW X6 which was totally intolerant of any uneven tyre wear or pressure. Hateful thing, but thankfully the Range Rover seems far better behaved.

...or another option.

See if you can pick up a pair of new/used rims.

Bin the knackered tyre and tuck the scuffed rim away as an 'incase of emergency'. Keep the other one as a full-sized spare.

Then get 2x new tyres on the new/used rims and you're good to go.

If it's really that fussy, you can always buy a new tyre and shave it down to match the others for tread. A waste of money in one way but cheaper than binning 3 good tyres.

Seeing as you're at 5mm on the other tyres I personally would just replace the 1 tyre on this sort of vehicle. If it were a performance car I would replace a pair, or if the other tyre on the same axle was at or below 4mm I would again replace a pair.

Do you have a full size spare ?

If it's worn, then use that - if it's new, buy another new one & put the new pair on the front & the old one becomes the spare.

That’s a good idea, thanks.

I’ll have a look.
