Series 2a full rebuild cost
Discussion
Hi
Been offered a series 2 for £500. It’s got some sentimental value so rather than break it I’d like to rebuild it.
I think the engine is ok but needs a new clutch. If I was working on the presumption that everything is rotten (chassis bulkhead etc) how much money would have to be thrown at it? Would want it to be usable, not concours and will be able to do most of the work ourselves.
Cheers

Parts are cheap as chips and all is just Meccano if you can weld then chassis legs and rear cross member are not expensive but if you do a galvanised chassis the you are talking a couple of grand.
This could be fun https://jauntmotors.com/

Off the top of my head I think a galvanised chassis is c. £1500, bulkhead I'm not sure but maybe £750-ish for a new galv one? Good second hand ones are not easy to find but you can get those blasted and galvanised, you have to brace them to stop them distorting.
Clutch will be very easy once it's all out of the car. Everything else, well, if you can re-use with new bolts etc you're not into a lot more money, just effort, until you start thinking about whether and how to paint it, but that can be done cheaply enough if you're not after showroom finish.
Would be a great project but having done a lot of work on my Defender on the drive, I would thoroughly recommend having an indoor space big enough to work around it!

It's a bit of an open ended question. Like how long is a piece of string....
£500 is cheap for any Series these days. Breaking it would be madness to some extent. However a rebuild could stretch from £3000-15,000 or more.
If you are planning on a full chassis rebuild, then that also means suspension, overhauling axles & brakes. And if the engine/gearbox is unknown condition.
That said, you might be able to get it running and tidy for £500. Really difficult to tell.

Well, unless it's an actual pile of assorted parts, it's going to be worth £500.
Cost to sort it out depends how bad it is, but they're simple beasts.
A full brand new chassis is about £2-3k depending on spec. Good used bulkhead is probably a few hundred (new is closer to £1800), but in both cases, if you can manage at least farm-level welding, you can sort it out yourself as long as there is metal there to work with (complete rear crossmember is about £100, for example).
Huge parts availability makes all the minor stuff easy enough to get, and it's usually quite cheap, but does add up if you're going nose to tail through the entire thing.
I'd go have a look and see what state it's in before deciding. Actually, I'd likely have already bought it regardless, so it's a bit of a "do as I say, not as I do" one.
