Discovery SDV6
Discussion
Evening,
I cant find too many threads on the first 10 pages or so for the Discovery.
I would like to get some real life owners thoughts on the car.
My 4.4 Vogue from 2012 has just stopped working at 205,000 miles so probably time for a new car.
I have test driven a 2018 HSE Lux and to be honest was amazed at how good a car it seemed, I never really like the old style Discovery and no doubt over time standards rise in the trim and accessories.
It seemed to me to be every bit as luxurious as my vogue ( if not more so ) seemed to be pretty much as quick as the vogue although delivers the speed a little differently.
Anything I should be aware of ? Any recalls that I need to check have been done, although it is from a main dealers so would like to think its all been done.
Whats the rear entertainment system all about ? is it just for playing DVD's ?
What are must have extras I should be considering on the car ?
What are the bits that sound good but in reality are not so ? I see it has park assist which sounds good but I can park, does anybody ever use it ?
They claim is was ex LR management so the spec seems pretty high.
thanks

Interesting. I've a Disco4 and I can't see myself going to a Disco5, they just don't look right and its not just the rear.
Your 2012 RR would have been end of the line so as good as it gets. The D5 is from 2017 onwards, If you are set on one I would go as new as poss !

I had a couple of Disco5's as management cars when I worked there. In 2017 and 2018, they were the sweet spot of car to payment for a certain level of the management team at JLR, so there were quite a few management cars. HSE and HSE Lux trim levels were only slightly more per month for us, so the majority went for those.
I swapped mine at 12 months and c. 30k miles, and having not been an SUV type person at all before, I thought they were great family cars. Built on the same D7u platform as L405 Range Rover, and L494 RRS, so a very refined car, with quality interior materials. 7 useful seats, even for adults in 3rd row, and prime reason for Disco over RR would be the 3rd row I expect.
I always had the 237bhp 2.0 litre 4 pots, and that was a perfectly good powertrain. I regularly towed 3T with it, and never felt lacking. Powertrain sound is not magnificent, but despite the v6 being nicer, which diesel is? I had a couple of minor issues with them, but not surprising as the management often got the first ones in volume production.
In my opinion, rear entertainment is a bit of a gimmick. My kids (12 and 16) were initially excited by the idea, but soon realised that an iPad is much nicer from a resolution, ease and content point of view. However, HSE Lux trim level is a very nicely specified car, and Lux meant rear seat entertainment as standard.
I would expect there to be a minor facelift to Discovery soon, likely including the new twin screen (think Velar, new Evoque etc.) infotainment and cabin architecture. Worth bearing in mind if you are considering new.
Panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, and cooled front seats were the three luxuries I enjoyed the most. I would have ticked adaptive cruise control and advanced tow assist too had they been available to me, but they were not at the time.
Martin.

Thanks for reply Martin, I took the plunge and purchased a 2018 HSE Lux, It seems to have some of the additional packs added to it so it stands out from the standard ones which is nice !
It was also an ex LR management car which fits with your story !
Mine too has the cooled seats which in yesterdays heat was great and not as full on as having aircon blasting which im not so keen on.
Unfortunately there was a very limited hand over due to covid so im sure the car does loads that I will have to find out in time.
I noticed there is a micro sim in the centre console, should that be there or has it been left by the previous owner ?

Yep, comes with its own sim and data for the first three years. Let's the nav etc go online, and even over-the-air-updates for the InTouch system. It's a lovely drive, and also purchased mine via the approved ex management route.
