What’s a good OFF ROAD vehicle? I like the look of Bowlers http://www.bowler-offroad.com/ but far too expensive for a first time toy, unless they are available second hand somewhere?

Any suggestions… a noisy custom V8 mentalist Land Rover appeals to me but I have no idea where to start looking for one? Can you get anything reasonable for say less than five grand?

Less than £5k might be pushing it, Drew originally designed the cheaper version of his current line up and www.tomcatmotorsport.co.uk took over.

www.tomcatmotorsport.co.uk/forsale/advert_5.html

That's a very nice vehicle at a good price.

These look great, thanks. Anywhere around Bedfordshire do these get used? I would like to see something like these in action..

No problem, they're cracking vehicles.

Your best bet is finding a local off roading club and keeping an eye out for any comp safaris that have/are due to be organised.

I've just had a look around and found a few clubs that seem to run them, your best bet is probably Midland Off Road Club, 01902 737152 but the others I found were...

Staffs/Shrops LRC, 01782 627101
Lincolnshire LRC, 01427 677357
3 Spires LRC, 01922 31631
Breckland LRC, 01692 404453

Devil's pit must be near to you - not model specific, so if you went along you get to see what options there are and their capabilities.

For 5k, a D90, or RR would be well within budget - I'd have the RR (but I am biased) for its "wafting in air-conditioned comfort" value.

Consider a light weight for looks and ability.
prices start at around £1500 for an ok vehicle.

You can pick up a range rover from £500 up. 2 grand will buy you a decent machine.

At that sort of money Discos come on the market.

5 grand will see you a 90 or series vehicle, best is a 90.

The world is your lobster in terms of modding. Bumpers, winches, sills, snorkels, tyres, protection, CB radio, gps, lift kits, monster articulation kits, the list goes on.

To throw an air of controversy to this subject, the Wife and me used to be menders of the Shires LR Club (Romsey). The wife had a suzuki Jimny 4x4. She spent about £1000 on Big Suspension, chunky tyres, bash plates, plus the pretty stuff like "A" Bars, sill protectors etc.
Off road, it would leave the majority of LR's standing. the only people that passed us were fully blown 90's or 110's with megga lifts, and serious all terrain setups, or what is possibly the ultimate LR's ... 101's
On a few occasions we actually helped recover G wagons, shoguns and even the odd disco.

We had it wading the odd river (up to 4 feet deep), and used to play on the Tank and Army courses on Salisbury plain with some of the Green Lane people, who also drove highly modified Landies.

Down side to the little suzuki was an under powered 1.3 engine, and limited space inside the cabin.

New the Jimny is £9000 but you can pick up second hand ones, only driven by aunty dorris for £2500, and if you speak to the right people, you can get it fully modified for less than £1500.

Burn the heretic!

(The old Suzuki SJs are pretty handy off road too, there was one at the last off road day I did that was banging and popping like a good 'un on overrun)

I'd get a rangey/disco if I ever wanted to go any distance on road (V8 for choice, and if I didn't want to wade at all) or a 90 if I didn't. The defender is probably better off-road, and considerably worse on.

>>>Edit to add more of my humble opinion: Defenders tend to hold their value better than rangeys/discos so for $5k you'll get a half decent 90 and maybe some bits, or a fully kitted RR.

Could not agree more. Much better value to buy something someone else has spent all the time and money on. That is what I did

Unfortunately due to work commitments I no longer have time to do any serious off roading so I have reluctantly decided to sell my toy. To give an idea of what you can get, mine cost over £12k to put together (according to the previous owner). A tax exempt 100" Rangey, 4" lift, big BFG mud terrains, 3.9 auto, LPG, Cages, harnesses, winch, and a body almost indistinguishable from a 90 despite still being 100". As soon as I get it MOT'd it will be going on the market for just over 4 grand.

Fortunately, I will not be giving up on Lode Lane, but I just cannot decide whether to go for a nice LPG Classic Rangey (I have had several of these before) or a TDi Disco. Comments please (or offers of swaps/px etc)

I think it's in the region of about £1200 maybe + VAT, depends on who you go to.
