RRS needs a service at just under 30,000 miles. Wife rings dealer to book it in and is quoted £780 for a 'three year service.' I rang the dealer this morning to find out what the feck I was paying £780 for but service dept was busy and as ever they couldn't be arsed to return my call before they left at lunchtime.

Anyone else had this? I've had a look online and can find nothing that mentions RRSs needing a special three year service and the closest I can see is a major service at £540.

It’s often main dealers who respond. Also, as long as it’s a VAT registered garage and they use OEM parts, the warranty is unaffected.

I bet that's the price for cars over 3yrs old.

Your's is the "I want to keep the warranty and am scared to go anywhere else" price.

Didn't get a main dealer reply on the link, more's the pity. I used VAT registered garages on my BMW but given the horrendous warranty issues I've had with the RRS over the last ten months I have lost all confidence in getting through the next two years without multiple visits to the dealer (again). For that reason alone I don't want LR being funny with me if I've had it serviced outside of the network.

Similar situation recently 2yr service on Disco 5.

First main dealer £720 when I enquired they confirmed it was:-
- Air filter = ok...
- Pollen filter = ok
- Oil filter = ok...
- Oil...

When I asked what else I got the answer...
- ...
- we will fill your screen wash!!!

I was so shocked I ended up phoning the other main dealers in the area, as I was convinced the first dealer had a serious glitch in pricing! While I got a quote £100 cheaper they were all insane and when I challenged that even at a retail rate the parts would cost around £150 I got a simple ”it’s 3hrs labour sir”

Long rant short I took the car back to the independent I used for my D4, paid £250 happily to the family run garage and accepted if the car breaks I will have a more interesting discussion with the warranty but the law is still on my side...

It does sound poor value but like you said may be better for warranty claims should you need it.

Do they offer a service plan that may be more competitive?

Book time 3hrs. Mechanic will do it in an hour.

Basic servicing works is very lucrative for dealers.

I’d say the lesson is don’t buy a car with a shocking reliability record.

Yes, things can go wrong with any make / model, but they do seem to wrong more often than is acceptable with the crap that JLR churn out

Yeah, this is where you went wrong. No independent specialists near you?

Aye, there's a couple nearby that I'll check out online over the next few days. As it stands, the online service history is a fecking mess so I've asked the dealer to sort it out. Once that's done I'll see what service it actually needs.

£229 inc vat for a 3 yr service on my 4.2V8 at local independent where Ive been taking both previous cars for last 8 years.

I did the dealer service once when it was under warranty and it started off at £450 ish they wanted to add £400 for some new brakes, by the end of a 40k mile service they reckoned my 4 yr old car needed £1000 of work. Thats when I declined and started to use the indy garage. Same LR parts are fitted, but the labour rate is £60 an hour vs £130, you can nearly 1/2 the bill.

£720?!? What a joke. Thats a £300 job at best at an independent. Maybe £400 if you use LR parts which aren't made by LR anyway. pleased you saw the light smile

I sold my D3 in February this year, but worth noting that everything that went wrong with my D3 was nothing to do with oil changes biggrin

I agree given the car was new (to me) I thought I’d give the main dealer a chance... But given the price and the fact my D4 was looked after by a fantastic independent (albeit in a very basic workshop - not the JLR shiny showroom) there was no way I was paying £720 for an oil change.

I just feel sorry for those that don’t understand the work or don’t have a decent independent nearby! As it really is bordering on unethical pricing from JLR!

A quick update, the original dealer ballsed up the service history so now it's a 3yr service at 464 which is marginally better. Next time I'll find a reputable indy, I'm buggered if I'm paying silly money for something so straightforward.
