any point in changing my '12 D4 to a '16 D4?
Discussion
My '12 D4, which I've owned since May'13 from 12k miles, now with 85k miles has had the major belt service, recent brakes/discs and has a full LRSH. The only issue is the ULEZ when I drive through London. But, is it really worth upgrading to the last of the '16 models? I've seen a 20k mile HSE at £34k. I'm not aware of any spec differences but any views appreciated.
Is yours already the 8-speed box? If so I don’t think I’d bother, especially if you’ve got a known good one that’s had all the servicing completed. Problem with a 20-30k miler is that you’re probably still going to need brakes and tyres imminently as in my experience that’s how long those parts last.
You should get a good five or six more years out of a 2012 without too many hefty bills - although any year car could hit you with a crankshaft problem.
How about holding on a little while and waiting for the new Defender or maybe a year-old D5? I’ve just changed my 2015 D4 for a brand new D5 and despite many concerns it’s actually a far superior car - some downsides but generally much better to drive and even more comfortable. Personally I’d either hold onto your current car or do a proper upgrade and go for one of the newer generation LRs.

Yes, she's an 8-speed and I tend to agree with you. I don't see what I'd gain aside from guaranteed depreciation with another newer D4.
I think I'd be working out how much you'd pay in ULEZ charges and how this compares with the depreciation hit. Unless you're through the ULEZ zone every day (in which case, why a Disco and not a cheap EV for running around in for next to nothing?) I'd be inclined to take the ULEZ hit until you have a better reason to change it. Oh, had a gearbox flush on my '65 D4 this year at a local indy. Mileage was 80k and it cost about £300. More for peace of mind than necessity.
