Range Rover reliability
Discussion
Having owned a freelander which I can only describe as disguting for reliability and parts cost I need to upgrade and was considering a 2003 Range Rover which I think is a gorgeous car.
However, I cannot help relating it to my freelander which is a shit shit shit car- goes wrong every month and averages 1k permonth in repairs of late (as and when our local LR centre can find thetime to fit us in)
Further down the line can similar things be expected of a range rover?
many thanks

Best advice is to find a different garage. There are lots of good independants who understand cars rather than follow the workshop manual. If you buy from a dealer, get them to throw in a warranty or give a discount on an extended one.
Visit some of the LR forums like Difflock or LR Owner International. There is a wealth of info there which can help diagnose problems and recommend reasonable specialists.
I have had freeloader and a Disco II from dealers, but wouldn't buy there again. Have a RR Classic now and work on it myself. It is not that complicated really. The model you are looking at has all the bells and whistles so there is theoretically more to go wrong, bu they are not all lemons and they are a lot of car for the money.

I've owned two Range Rovers and a Discovery and am about to buy another Disco, but ... I've never used main dealers for anything much. Find a good independent and stick with them - it'll save you a fortune. I can't say as the Land Rovers have been particularly unreliable compared to other cars I've owned, but the one thing I would say is that the parts aren't cheap, but then no worse than any other major manufacturer.
