Looking at changing my Freelander for a second hand Discovery Sport it would be from a Land Rover dealer due to the warranty but are they as bad as people say. Are the engines that bad that they are all going to fail or is there a year better than others.

I have a second hand DS HSE Luxury. I got it from a LRMD ,it was 18 months old, had done 7000 + miles, and was previously owned by LR, so I assume it was a demonstrator, loan car etc. Being LR approved, it had just been serviced and it came with a two year LR warranty. It has now done 31000+, just had its annual service and passed its second MoT no problems.

I replaced the front tyres at around 22,000 miles, the rears are the originals and there was no warning about them at this MoT.

The first and only not expected problem I had was with the tailgate lock and that was replaced under warranty. Nothing else until this service when the Haldex pump had to be replaced due to an apparently worn filter: the part itself cannot be preplaced so the whole pump has to be changed, cost around £850. I expected this to be covered by my now extended warranty but it was turned down as it's a serviceable part!

I get about 35mpg overall, which is perhaps a tad disappointing.

I came to the car after 15 years or so with V8 Jaguar saloons and it was my first SUV. I did not wish to make the change but wife found the Jaguar XF 5.0 V8 uncomfortable due to her hip ops. She finds the DS good for this. Although this is a luxury version, I like the utility-ness of the car as a do anything go anywhere seemingly very stable vehicle although I don't use it off road. Having seven seats is useful occasionally.

One thing: it is the first version of the DS so it has the 2.2 Ford engine out of the Freelander, not the LR ingenium engine. Reading what I have as regards AdBlu etc which this engine does not use I am rather glad I have this version. Luckily, I rarely go into London so will not be caught very often by the ULEV charge, although this is something to be aware of if seeking a second hand DS and using it in London, and maybe other cities in future years.

We wanted one since it was launched, so when we decided to replace our Honda CRV we test drove one but ended up buying a Mercedes GLC. The Land Rover had a bigger boot (and +2 seating if required), but apart from that we thought the GLC was much nicer. The reliability scare stories from people with Land Rovers also put us off.

I had the Haldex problem on my freelander I contacted Land Rover direct and got 50% towards the cost, I do a bit of towing the freelander has been fine not sure the Discovery Sport with the engine problems would be as good. I have also looked at the VW Toureag which it's said can tow 3.5 tonnes but to do this it needs an expensive cooling fan swap which is ridiculous as its advertised that it can tow.
I would have thought the Haldex problems would have been sorted on by now with w just the newer engines that had the problem, I think I may keep the Freelander or look at something elsewhere maybe Jeep or Ford.

Pbuzz,

Did you contact direct Land Rover or the warranty company? Did you make the contact before or after the repair was carried out? I may pursue this myself.

We have a used DS also from a main dealer, and have put almost 40k miles on it in two years. Absolutely brilliant all rounder. I wasn't sold on the idea of an SUV but we wanted a decent size dog carrier

Averaging around 37-38mpg but we do a lot of country driving. Not so much in town.

The 7 seats and/or big boot make it very versatile.

Only issue we've had was the EGR needed replaced but this was done under warranty. I'd happily buy another although would not run it without a warranty. Even though its been reliable, I like the peace of mind.

It's over 50k miles now so will look to change next year, more than likely to another Land rover or range rover

I contacted Land Rover directly as my warranty had run out, it had been in with a Haldex problem I think it was cleaned out new seals fitted. The last time I think I paid £450 towards the cost it's seems to have worked, it's done just over 50,000 miles now I've had it for 4 years and just fancied a change I didn't think it would be this hard to find something.

There's a Ford edge just come up for sale at a dealers near me I'll take a ride over and have a look but these seem to have gearbox problems, everything seems to have problems just the luck of the draw if you get one with a problem.

MrsC has an Ingenium DS SE Tech manual (18/18) that’s done about 34k from new. Other than a poorly fitted tailgate that was rectified under wty, it’s been a good car. It’s averaged about 38mpg on her 500 mile weekly usage. We’re still on the original tyres (the front are at approx 3mm) with the backs on about 4mm. The nav is a bit slow/outdated though she loves the car. Her dilemma is what she’ll replace it with in 18 months time & whether they’ll have a decent hybrid by then (I can’t believe I’ve typed that!) wink

Happy as Larry with mine and it's an Ingenium. Had a couple of wierd heating issues when I first got it but all sorted now and appear to have been software related as no parts have ever been replaced.
17k miles in nearly 3 years so not overly used but not had any dpf issues that you may have read about.
Brilliant tow car, love the design and love the drive. Can get just over 40-45 mpg if I try hard.
I have now found a reasonable main dealer as the original supplying dealer were rank amateurs (or piss takers, can't make my mind up which).
Biggest downside is size of fuel tank (Adblu) and hence small range but not really a big issue just a mild irritation.

I live in Surrey too. Who is the "reasonable" main dealer you have found. I'm not all that happy about the one that I have been using so far. I may change.

Contrary to what I read it is the one in the Surrey town beginning with "G" and ending in "D"
Can only speak from my own experience but I have found them to be pretty efficient at what they are supposed to do unlike the other main dealer that I previously had the misfortune of using.

Great cars with very cheap running costs.Ours has averaged 40mpg over 50k miles and is on the original tyres.
We have a service pack so the add blue gets topped up free of charge and the only expense has been a wiperblade.

I had a late model Freelander 2 and I'm now on my second ingenium engined HSE diesel.

Fantastic cars for our needs though I'd have preferred a petrol.

They've not been without issues. Diesel contamination of the oil and electronic issues. Apparently I've struck lucky with my dealer because every time it's needed work they've given me the keys to brand new cars. Maybe because I'm fairly laid back with them. I don't know.

I really like the DS. It really does everything we need from carrying mucky dogs commuting and carrying 7 people. A quick going over with the Karcher and a hoover and it's fit to go to a posh event or whatever.

Will I get a third? Probably, but I'm giving consideration to Volvo, Jaguar F-Pace and maybe that Cults SUV, which looks like fun.

I'm also considering not getting a SUV. Volvo V90 Cross Country and the Skoda Superb Scout will be worth a look.

We ran a 65' plate Ingenium SE Tech for 3 years/30K from new. The good news is it didn't actually break down, even though it spent far too much of its life in the workshop. We don't do motorway miles often,

Bad things:

* Rear camera, tailgate struts, replaced under warranty
* Several recalls
* Endless updating of software
* Small fuel tank/short range thanks to Adblue tank
* Terrible satnav
* Claimed 21K miles service interval was actually about 8K
* Oil dilution - dealer seemed totally unconcerned that the dipstick level was now an inch over the max!
* Active DPF regens continually needed
* Rear brake discs rust badly - we had two sets replaced under warranty after some argument.
* Uncomfortable, both as driver and front seat passenger: I'm 6'3" and the passenger footwell is full of awkward lumps , and when driving, the SE tech seats (even with electric seat upgrade) didn't offer any rake adjustment. After an hours driving I was actually in pain, no matter how it was set up.


Overall, disappointing, particularly coming from many happy years with an FL2. Mrs SB's first "new" car, and we felt nothing but relief when we sold it.

We have a MY16 HSE black, overall happy with it. Main dealer is a bit crap, but the car has been pretty reliable. Couple of minor niggles - tailgate issue which was caused by leaking fog light and an exhaust gasket leaking both fixed without issue. On free servicing programme so running costs are next to nothing. Will probably move it on next year for something petrol/hybrid possibly as it's the family car.
