I believe the key is charged whilst in the ignition with
ignition on which is fine unless the wife is just using car for short shop/ school runs which doesn’t seem to be giving it enough time to charge and eventually it goes flat.

I’m assuming it’s some form of inductive contactless charging so as a work around with two flat keys I stuck them on a Qi phone charger and voila, this morning no issues.

Question is... is this a good idea? I can’t think of any drawbacks but just in case I’m missing something I thought I’d ask the learned community.

If it charges it then I suspect you won't do any harm.

The nominal life for the rechargeable battery is about 15 years, so you shoudl be ok for a while yet. The battery is not designed to be serviceable, and the fob itself is sealed for waterproofing.

If you look on eBay, there are people offering a battery replacement service where you send your key to them, and they send you back with a new case and battery. As an example (I have no connection to this or any other seller BTW), have a look here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Range-Rover-Sport-Key-F...

Yeh, I’m happy enough replacing the battery. I’ll get a couple to change at my leisure but for now the Qi
charging appears to be working until I can get back
And give car a long run or replace batteries.

Dunno about the cost but it’ll be easier to get and program up replacement fobs and simply swap the key part over.

Interesting tip about the using an inductive charge point.
