Legality of child using third row seats in 7-seat RRS (L494)
Discussion
I was about to pull the trigger on a seven seat MY16 RRS to ferry two adults and four children (between 4 and 9) around. However, the dealer was unsure of the legalities surrounding this or whether a child's seat would fit in the rear two seats (third row). Does anyone have any experience in this? Really trying to avoid the MPV option...

I think they will (I'm going to try) but want to know if using the rear seats for children under 12 is legal and whether people here have done it.
I don't see why they would be illegal. Do you have anything that leads you to think they would be? They are just seats and forward facing same as any other.300bhp/ton said:

This came from a chap at a LR dealer. It could well be he hates commission so just told me a pack of lies but I thought it worth checking. The manual for the Discovery 3/4 has a section that tells you what seats can fit in what locations. Row three in a D4 is suitable for groups 1/2/3 (forward facing), so any child over 9 months. They’re unsuitable 0/0+ and rear facing.
See if the RRS has the same, it’ll be in the manual under Occupant Safety. Although the row three seats in a Disco are much bigger than the occasional use seats in an RRS.
Edit: If you can live with the questionable rear end of the new Disco why not consider that over the RRS? It’s far more suited to carting four (growing) children around and drives much the same (none are exactly sporty!).

From the online MY16 RRS Manual:
FWIW I had a MY16 L494 with the 7 seat option, and I wouldn't recommend it for what you are proposing. They are great for a last minute situation or emergency, but certainly not something to live with every day. The seats are cramped, very hard to get in/out of, and the footwells are non-existent so knees are high up making the journey uncomfortable. You also lose 90% of the boot.

I think the law changed not so long ago where you now have to use child seats up to 12 years old or a certain height. There are exceptions like an unplanned or emergency journey etc.
But the lightweight high backed booster type seats don't really take up a huge amount of extra room and they just use the seat belt across the child's body rather than harnesses and isofix. Depends on the age of your children but my 3 year old daughter is already in a high backed booster type seat If it helps.
