Discovery 4 - Remap experiences
Discussion
Hi All,
My household daily’s are a Bmw 530e and Discovery 4 (2009 6 speed tdv6). When I fancy wasting money / time I’ve got a few bikes, scooters and a 1973 Alfa GT 1600.
I tend to whizz around in a 530e (company car zzz) but as my wife is now on maternity with no pay and only does 25 miles a day, we’ve decided to swap cars and she daily’s the 530e on electric only, and I’m now doing 18k miles in the discovery. The car has 98k miles on it, but the previous owner had the engine replaced at 80k miles. I generally change the oil every 6-8k miles DIY as it’s really easy, and to preserve the turbos and avoid massive bills.
I was looking for the forums collective experience of the DMS (?) or other remap of the discovery 3.0 TDV6 in 6 speed guise. The car is ok, but a bit slow to take off and holds the gears a bit too long. I find it a bit rattly but am spoilt having previously having an L322 V8. The 29/30mpg is very welcome though.
I suspect that I’ll be looking at 50k miles in the car in the next few years, and would like it to be a bit more pokey and a bit quicker off the mark (not that I’m racing, but predictable junction pull-always would be nice).
In particular, are the gearboxes Ok for the remap? (I remember reading that 2.7 diesels had a gearbox like chocolate). Do the turbos hold up, are the internals capable? Will it shorten the life of the car?
Experiences good or bad welcome!
Will

You have the same 6 speed auto as the D3 had, it’s also the same fitted to the mk1 RRS supercharged so it’s good for the power.
Make sure it’s been megaflushed to keep the box happy and that it’s had the turbo pipework upgrade done. If not, a decent LR specialist will sort you out for that.
For a remap. Alive or BAS both do great maps.
My mate had an Alive mapped one and it went very well.
I have a BAS mapped D3 and it also goes very well.
BAS give better low down grunt with decent mid range pull. Alive seem to have better higher range pull but not as good low down.

the turbo pipework upgrade
I haven't come across that one...Disco 4 secondary turbo drain modification.
Stops the smoke under hard acceleration.

I quite like the idea of the Bluefin remap so you've got some control. Handy to be able to return it to stock for diagnosing any problems. I think yours is an ECU out job for a remap?
The only two maps that have any respect in the D3 and D4 world are the BAS and Alive maps. OP: You have the same 6Sp box as the D3s. Sorry to disappoint. As AJM says, a mega flush is worth doing for the sake of £250.
Can you get EGR blanking kits for the D4? Could be worth doing at the same time as the re-map. Will also help pick up and take away something else that could go wrong.
I sold my D3 in Jan of this year. It was the TDV6 model and that really needed more power. Could never be bothered though as keeping the thing going was expensive enough let alone adding re-maps!
