New Defender.. anybody placed a deposit?
Discussion
Went to my local dealer a couple of months back and spoke to a salesman who said they're currently taking £1000 refundable deposits on new Defender. He said that would get you on the waiting list and it would guarantee you invites to previews and maybe other things organised by Land Rover between now and delivery. He didn't give any indication of timelines, prices, options or anything.
I went in the next day to place my deposit and was met with a lady on reception who wasn't aware of new Defender, and didn't seem particularly keen to help me. There were no salesmen available at the time, so I left and haven't returned. Still on the fence but the more I read, the more I think it's going to be too pricey for me at the moment.

I've just had the LR Salesman that we've dealt with for a number of years ask if we want to put a deposit down. My response was that I presumed it was a refundable deposit to secure a slot for the first batches.
Difficult when there is so little information out there, but I can't see us replacing our current D4 with a D5 - too big, too ugly and too expensive. We bough the D4 after LR were unable to give a delivery date for a Disco Sport at the point they changed over to the Ingenium engines, so a bit wary of any "First Edition" new models.
It'll be a big change for us if we don't like the Defender having purchased Discoveries since 1995 as our main family car.

In the camo pics JLR are tweeting currently it simply looks like a slightly messed-with D3/D4. I can't upload a pic for some reason. Try this: https://twitter.com/LandRover_UK/status/1123155796...

You say that like it’s a bad thing? Most people seem to be seeing it as a positive, especially D4 owners who have been disappointed with the D5. Crumpet said:

You say that like it’s a bad thing? Most people seem to be seeing it as a positive, especially D4 owners who have been disappointed with the D5. But whilst a Disco-based Defender will, I'm sure, do the job admirably, it's not very imaginative, and you could say it reflects JLR's D5 own goal.
The Discovery was always a luxury-level up from the Defender and I still think they need something utilitarian if they want to sell to the "right" buyer.
Ability to hose the interior out would be key. I'm midway through converting my D90 to 3.9 Auto from 3.5 Manual and I'm tempted to bling up the interior but then again with ally floors and the ECU in a Dribox, I have no concerns about removing any muck!

Well, not exactly. The D3/4 was a good car with a strong following. I'd have looked at a D4 if (a) there was a decent petrol option and (b) MrsC had been slightly more tolerant of the shape. Which is why I ended up in another FFRR.

The ability to hose down an interior may be key for what you want but I am pretty damn sure LR will not care one bit about that. Sadly this comes up a lot in any discussion on the new Defender. I have spent quite a bit of time applying sound deadening and carpet to my Series 3. Upsets the purists, but there is literally nothing to to lower the NVH in a Series, especially as mine is a commercial bodied variant. Latest article I read suggests a Frankfurt Show launch, but I don't really see why LR need to launch it at a motor show. It deserves it's own dedicated event.
If its live streamed during working hours, I shall be booking myself a meeting room and watching it,live, but knowing Land Rover, the page will probably crash!

I like Discovery's, but there is no denying the 5 is a departure in too many ways from the core Discovery buyer market and is really pitched at a rather different place in the market.
good new pics here

Umm. I’m not saying it doesn’t look like an ok SUV. But I can see no resemblance or design language akin to the Defender linage.
Jeep seem to do rather well keeping even the JL Wrangler looking much like the original GP1. It’s heritage is very clear.
These new pics it could be a Shogun under the wrap for all I know. If I wasn’t being told it is meant to be a new Defender.

That's a decent take on it. It does look less like a D3/D4 - maybe a bit chunkier? Be good to see the final result. But it's still not going to be something which someone with a bag of spanners can fart about with (as I've been doing with mine this evening!)

really what about the crease all the way down the side and the tyre on the door? yes it's looking a bit generic land rover but to me its looking like a shorter disco 4 and as an owner of a disco 4 thats perfect for me!Jeep seem to do rather well keeping even the JL Wrangler looking much like the original GP1.
