L405 TDV6 vs TDV8
Discussion
I owned a TDV8 405, absolutely loved the car and the engine...however car was a real problem and was in the dealers 9 times in 3 months for various electric gremlins. It was a (bought with 25 miles on the clock) 2017 AB version.
In the end I rejected the car and while the replacement was on order, was given a V6 405 Vogue to run, which I ran for about 6 months.
IMHO although the V6 was nice enough, it wasn’t in the same league as the V8, and wasn’t appreciably more economical either. Being a V6 405 meant it didn’t have the dynamic engine mounts that the V8 has and the car didn’t seem to handle as well - and the engine mounts are all I can put it down to.
Currently running a Velar D300 V6 which I think is the same engine as used in the 405, and in the Velar it is truly awesome, plenty quick enough, 45 to 50 mpg on a run (real thirsty round town though) .
So IMHO the V8 is the one to go for in a 405, but the V6 itself is a good unit, maybe not as well applied in the 405 as it is in other JLR models.

Hasn't the V8 got anti-roll suspension, whereas the V6 doesn't?I think you’re right. The current V8 diesel also has active locking rear diff that is omitted on the V6, but not sure if that has been the case all the through production.
I’ve not owned, but have driven both and of the two the V8 would get my vote if funds stretch to it as the power available and its delivery better suits a big luxury car.
Apply a bit of man maths and you might be able to convince yourself that, with the price difference between petrol and diesel, a supercharged might not be outrageously more expensive to run than the V8 diesel...

We looked at the Super and it was a lot more to buy.I’ve not owned, but have driven both and of the two the V8 would get my vote if funds stretch to it as the power available and its delivery better suits a big luxury car.

There not being a huge number of supercharged ones around does seem to keep the residuals strong, even to the point that I saw a dealer recently put the price of one up by 5%.
Both the v6 and v8 diesels are still great cars. Personally I’d take the bigger engine, even if it meant a lower spec, but I’ve got a thing for large displacement engines. The reality is that there’s not a huge difference in most real world situations and friends running the v6’s are entirely happy with their cars.
