My Mum and Dad are Caravanners and currently tow with a Beemer 520i which is ok, but a little underpowered when it comes to inclines. Dad is now fancying a RR and as neither he or I know a great deal about them, I thought I would ask the LR forum to see if you could help us out. First of all the question is 2.5D, 4.6 or 4.0. So far we have dismissed the 4.6 as the dismal MPG is not going to helped by a tonne and a half of Aluminium strapped to the back. So what can you expect to get from the 4.0 solo and likewise the 2.5D. Further more what do we need to look out for when test driving etc?

Thanks in advance

HI DEAN,

Our 4.6 Vogue is the mutts**** ! I think you would find the Diesel underpowered. Can't comment on the 4.0 as I haven't driven one,but would have thought it would not be much more economical than the 4.6.

Cheers

On my third RR now , previously had a an Overfinch ( 350 ci mouse Chevrolet engine) and a 3.9 Vogue. Traded the Vogue for a 4.6 2000 HSE. Fitted a set of Koni`s and a new steering damper along with Blue Poly bushes, IMO it`s the dangley bits, superb stereo , will go anywhere ( I live in Suffolk) I put it ( so far) also managed 20 mpg , more than the Porsche and the 360.....fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

I tow a 500kg trailer with a tonne or so of TVR Chimaera on it with a 3.9 Discovery. You definitely know the trailer is there, especially going up hills, but it tows sweet as a nut. You could easily find yourself exceeding the 60mph speed limit on motorways. So I would say "Go for it".

(I get 15mpg with the trailer on, and without it 13mpg round town and 21 mpg on a run.)

Don't go for the 4.0 - its underpowered and doesn't have all the kit that a 4.6 has.

If you're really worried about fuel consumption, look for a 4.6 which has been converted to LPG.

Use a 4.0 HSE, 2000 model and no problems. MPG hovering at around 20 and only toy it doesn't have is Sat Nav.

Vary satisfied and great reliabilty although heard a few horrors on 4.6's.

Diesel is woefully underpowered in 2.5 guise.

Cheers

Mostly engine blocks for some reason, although newer p38's were OK I've been told.

Stay calm!!

I`m ok now after a good nights sleep and a chill pill Nicholas.

Mines a late-ish one, a 2000 model with the GEMS ecu etc.
Is it the porous block syndrome, or the lean burn under load @ cica 2000 revs worry.?

Panic over Mikial!

Not so fond of the new shape but may swap into one of the last 2002 4.6's, as one going cheapish at local dealer.
