3rd gear on a Disco

Hello all,
I recently bought a 1998 series one Discovey 2.5 TDI, manual, 70,000 miles on the clock. Just to be on the safe side I'm having a service done as well as a new timing belt installed (I'm told it's needed around this milage). All in all I'm chuffed to bits driving along in it apart from one thing; changing gear between 2nd > 3rd or from 4th > 3rd in high revs. The problem seems to be that I just can't seem to connect to this gear. Have any of you experianced this and what could it be? Does it sound like a whole new gearbox is needed or simply just a part of it. As the the service and timing belt is setting me back the best part of £700 I'd appreciate any advice on how I can round this gear problem. If any!

Try changing the gearbox oil to the latest type or better still contact Difflock.com and use there oil
Takes about 1000m to take full effect but its magic
