Discovery Sport
Discussion
H everyone,
I'm seriously thinking of buying a Discovery Sport with a budget of around £25,000
Are there any issues i should be aware of before i purchase?
Black / Blue / Silver
Under 30k miles
Automatic
Bluetooh Phone
Leather (part)
DAB Radio
I'm currently looking at these, and if anyone has anything to say that can help me i'd really appreciate it.

The D sport is an updated Freelander 2, a good car for what it is. Will have the usual issues that you can associate with the brand/type of car. But I don't think there is much to worry about. It's all chalk and cheese at the end of the day and there will always be people who have had no trouble at all and others that have had loads.
Personally I'd probably be looking at the Jeep Renegade too, slightly more compact, but comparable.

Idle thoughts...
I got my DS just about two years ago. It's a 2015 2.2 HSE Luxury. It was 18 months old and had done 7500 miles. The car had been registered to LR UK so I assume it was used as a demonstrator, loan car etc. It came with a LR warranty which expires end January 2019.
Before this car I had had a succession of V8 Jaguars: an S-Type 4.0 V8 for three years, another S Type 4.2 V8 for over ten years, and a XF 5.0 V8 for nearly three years. I regarded the XF as a keeper but the wife found it rather uncomfortable and asked for it to be changed; shame! I was apprehensive about the completely different driving experience I was going to get into.
So, two years in with the DS and up to 26,0000 miles or so. Not much has happened. The cameras once stopped working, so did a key and the LR MD fixed these issues under warranty, no problems. I have also had the tailgate locking mechanism replaced. That's all. The biggest gripe I have and especially the wife is the crap navigation system/display. Occasionally I get warnings that something electrical has ceased operating eg a camera, ABS but these have all been fixed by switching of the ignition, waiting ten seconds and starting up again. In fact, I usually just continue driving until I stop the car anyway, and all is well on return.
Tyres seem to last well. It has the OE but I decided to replace the fronts at 24,000 miles. The rears still look very good.
As for MPG, I seem to get around 36 per gallon. I go to Cornwall (280 miles) twice a year and get maybe 40 MPG if I drive within reason.
Not been off road so cannot comment.
I don't like the absence of a spare wheel. It has a repair kit. Luckily, I recently had a large bolt go through a front tyre but managed to get it to a local tyre company so avoided using the kit. Fortunate escape, I think.
I find it a bit utilitarian but that means it's a very practical car..big pockets, loads of space, goes any where etc. I occasionally use the rear row of seats and the young great nieces like it!
Panoramic roof is nice and passengers always comment on it.
Looks like you're looking at a 2015 2.2 model which means it's the original version with the Ford engine. This engine was replaced by an LR Ingenium engine which is I gather a lot quieter and smoother. I think the later engine means you need AdBlue which then means a significantly smaller fuel tank and lower range. The Ingenium engine is starting to show problems eg the balance shafts. I'm content with the Ford engine.
Do I plan to keep this vehicle? Yes, and I'll extend the warranty. Would I get another? Yes if I wanted another SUV. I would be likely to get petrol rather than diesel, or maybe wait for the electric version which I think is some years away.

The reasons i'm looking at the DS,
1) I live in the countryside and in winter getting in and out can be an issue, so off road abiltiy is something it would actually be used for.
2) I have two kids, 6 months and 4 years and i want something spacious, comfortable and safe for them to be in.
3) Want to be able take mountain bikes and fill a good sized boot up with stuff for weekends away
3) Wife doesnt like driving my current X5 so something smaller means she can use it more
4) I like the looks
5) I have a daily commute of 60 miles round trip, so something comfortable for me to drive is important.
6) I'm likely to keep it for 3-4 years
My wife's DS has the new 2.0d engine and has been faultless over 40k miles and has returned 39.8mpg.
The car is on the original tyres with a few thousand miles left in them.
Try to get an HSE which comes well equipped and try and get the pan roof which makes the car very airy.
All in all the car has been first class and wouldn't hesitate to get another.

MrsC has an Ingenium engined 2018 DS Sport SE Tech (manual) that she's had from new....it's now done 17k miles and other than a few bits of poor detail when it was new, it's so far been a good car. Our car is doing about 37mog average and will do about 40 mpg on a long run (& with me driving it) although it's quite a small tank with a real life range of about 400 miles. We've running standard wheels and hence the ride is good although it does like Adblue (asking for a fill up every 3.5-4k miles) and it's getting a decent run every day with a 60 mile round trip to work including dual carriage ways at 70mph.
If you're not aware the DS has a plastic bonnet and also the roof if you don't have a glass roofed on your car.

See my post on balancer shaft whine. I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole. Overpriced rubbish with dreadful and very expensive dealers. So many better options out there. For example, my wife’s Allroad is so much better it’s laughable. Build quality is on a different planet, it’s much faster, more economical, more comfortable, quieter, far better distance car, perfectly good enough Quattro ability for rural dwellers (we live a mile down a rough farm track). This is just one alternative, plenty of others. Go Subaru if you want slightly more off road ability. You could get a virtually new Outback for your budget. Much better cars and much better value with balance of 5 year warranty (not that you’ll need to use it).

We’re just renting the Allroad for 2 years, much lower TCO than buying one, so may not even need an oil change. As a car though, it’s far superior to my fathers DS. If buying with my own money, I’d go Subaru all the way for this type of vehicle. troika said:

Are you basing servicing costs on you “might not need one” and the fact our DS is on its original tyres at 40k miles and the Audi would have been on its 3rd set speaks volumes.

I’ve had no experience of Audi servicing. All I’m saying is that if it needs one, it will be an oil change before it goes back. It’ll cost whatever it costs, it’ll be irrelevant to the overall TCO. My Forester has so far done 50K miles on its boots and they look like they are good for another 50K. My Land Cruiser did 100K on a set. New 2019 RAV 4 also looks nice. Won’t go wrong or be taxed off the road either. Are you basing servicing costs on you “might not need one” and the fact our DS is on its original tyres at 40k miles and the Audi would have been on its 3rd set speaks volumes.
I have a DS, one of the early 2015 ones with the older SD engine, mine has been reasonably reliable apart from one serious issue with the PAS failing, although outside of warranty my dealer authorised a free repair.
Apart from that, it’s had the usual consumables, one set of tyres all round, one set of brakes all round.
Mine has done just over 40k miles, I live in the Highlands so it’s been used in deep snow a few times, when it has been absolutely excellent, especially one nightmare journey to Inverness to get my wife to hospital, there were cars and lorries in ditches everywhere but the Disco didn’t put a wheel wrong. Tooth over 3 hrs for a 75 mile drive though! I’ve driven them off road and they do pretty well, the electronic gizmos are pretty clever on the rougher stuff.
I have 2 Golden Retrievers who fit happily in the boot area, I’ve used the 7 seat option a few times and it’s been pretty useful for that.
I average about 45mpg but almost never drive in towns.
My wife loves driving it, I’m slithering about replacing it but I can’t think of anything else that’s as good an all rounder, which means I’ll probably be boring and get another one!

TCO? Total cost of ownership maybe? If so, your statement makes no sense if you are renting, as you will have nothing at all to show for your money at the end of the term. Not saying leasing isn't a good idea for some, but it really isn't a cheap way to ownership......

Don’t want to own the Allroad, it’s for a 2 year requirement. Cheaper than buying one and selling it 2 years later. I buy when I want to keep for longer i.e. my Subaru and California. Folk do whatever they like but I certainly wouldn’t buy a DS with my own money or run one out of warranty. Take a look at the honest John reports on them.
Deposit paid and picking up 18th December !
Thanks for all comments - i will always have a comprehensive warranty on all cars.
Looks like i might get a chance to test out it's off raod ability in North Yorkshire this December with weather forecasts - the X5 was pretty bad.

Thanks, i'm very pleased as we got everything we wanted on it and the low mileage. Apart from having to go to Glasgow to get it !It screams DPF issues on it.
I've never seen such a list of issues on 1 car;
