Father in law (88) managed to mis-fuel his 63 plate 2.2 diesel with a nice taste of unleaded. Drove about 14 miles before it ground to a halt.

Recovered by LR main dealer who has charged him a bit over £5k including a new pump, rails and injectors.

I did this myself in our 3.0 Sport (hangs head in shame) a while back. Stopped after about 4 miles, had the unleaded sucked out, filled with derv and all good.

My immediate reaction is that FIL has just been ripped off royally but before I go off pop, any other unfortunate out there who's done this in a Freelander?

Do it in any common-rail diesel, and the only fix any manufacturer or franchise dealer will go with is a full fuel system replacement, especially for anything under warranty. The high pressure pump works with incredibly fine tolerances, and needs the diesel for lubrication - petrol does a great job of stripping it quickly.

A drain will get you going again - but the pump may not survive long-term.

I would certainly take a chance for 5k, wouldn't you? Vast majority of misfuels will be fine after a drain, flush and filter change.

Taking any car to a main dealer after a misfuel is financial madness.

At 88, he's not worried about keeping the car long-term, I s'pose.

Joe Public just thinks "Is Broken. Take to building with same badge as car." - and, yes, gets rinsed for it.

Thanks for the input, I get why LR have gone this route.

I just know that my Indie would have drained/flushed it to establish the damage and if it ran fine, issued the cautionary warning about pump longevity, that's what happened with mine and that was 20,000 miles ago.

The joy of cars eh? smile
