Freelander 2 - TD4 v ed4 v SD4. Manual v Automatic.
Discussion
I test drove a 2.2 TD4 GS 5dr Auto Freelander 2 and really enjoyed it.
Before committing to getting a TD4 I wondered if folk had some insight in to what I would be giving up/gaining in terms of performance and, perhaps more crucially, MPG if I opted for TD4 over the ed4 or SD4?
I enjoyed driving the automatic too - do people have a view on choosing this over a manual? The salesman kept reiterating that a manual would feel heavy and cumbersome in this size of car.
Thoughts and information much appreciated!

So from memory the ed4 was manual 2wheel drive only. Usually opted for by company car users as the emissions were slightly lower. The TD4 was available with Manual and Auto and was 150bhp the SD4 came about when Land Rover facelifted the car in 2010 and was Auto only with 190bhp and bodycoloured side sills as standard.
Auto is nice in both TD4 and SD4. Fuel consumption between the two was neither here nor there.

I used to have a Defender, and as a result, got quite accustomed to the dealers courtesy fleet of Freelanders when it was in for warranty work.
To be honest, a manual doesn't really feel all that heavy or clunky to drive. I personally prefer automatics, and did prefer the Auto Freelanders, but thats not to say the manual wasn't any good. Just personal preference. If you are planning on doing any offroading/greenlaning I think an auto would be the best choice.
If I was looking for one I'd probably look out for a SD4, as mentioned above, theres not much difference between the TD4 and SD4 in economy, but it does have a bit more power.
I never had an eD4 so can't comment on that.
Then again, the TD4 is a decent engine, and will have more than enough power and economy for most uses - I used to average 40mpg with them, combined with the auto and GS spec it's pretty much all the car you'll need. I was really impressed with the F2.

I purchased a TD4 XS 6 speed manual
had it 3 months, all was ok but the auto was a better all round option low miles 1 owner etc so
traded it for an Auto SD4 HSE
freel2 forum has tons of info on what to look for.
the SD4 has 190hp from factory
same engine as TD4 so that could be mapped, the clutch and flywheels are prone to slipping and quite spendy to get replaced.
