Anybody suffered with the heater fan "stalling" as they describe it?
DS Forum seems to uncover a few issues with heater not working and requiring the dash out and new fan being fitted which doesn't necessarily fix the problem.
Twice after car has been sat for a week I was unable to get fans blowing.
First time it (they) just started after going over a speed hump after about 40 mins with no heat.
Second time - no fans for a hour and a half journey. Parked up came back to car after about 2 hours and fans started after moving off.

It’s a known issue. Has happened to my wife’s 15 plate DS twice in the past year. Both times when it has sat for a while because the fan motor contacts stop working for some reason.

It was supposed to be fixed at the last service but I found out later they only did a software update. To replace the fan it means taking the dash out, and I’m not convinced any dealer would make a good job of putting it back. So haven’t pushed them to do so under warranty.

The last time it happened I called out LR assist and they showed me how to get the fan working. It’s very easy, takes seconds.

Lift the bonnet and on the back (near the window) on the RHS is a liftable plastic flap. Open it and look with a torch diagonally towards the drivers side of the car. You will see the fan not moving. Give the fan a flick. The LR guy used an aluminum 2ft stick, but anything will do. Then give the fan a good run to remove the muck from the fan motor contacts.

Just make sure you sell it on before it needs a new fan.....

Umm I think it is not as easy on a MY17 model.
Both times happened after car not used for about a week.
The thought of a dealer taking the dash out doesn't fill me with confidence especially from previous experience of them!

Next time it happens call LR assist and they will come to you and show you how to get the fan working again.

I have a 2016 Discovery Sport that is often parked for a week or more.
I have recently encountered the heater fan problem in this thread and had it booked in at my LR dealer for repair in a couple of weeks.
As it's freezing at the moment I thought I would try the 'give the fan a nudge' remedy, by lifting the right hand plastic cover in the engine bay and moving the fan with an opened up wire coat hanger (special tool) and eureka.....the fan is spinning perfectly well now!
Contacted the LR dealer to ask if it was still worth bringing in my car for a 'permanent' repair and they said 'see how it goes' over the next 10 days because they cannot start a repair without a fault......I think it's more because they don't have a proper fix for this (yet?).
It's so easy to free the fan off if it sticks again that I think that's better than a dashboard strip out that may not fix the fault anyway?

Hello,
My 2016 Discovery Sport SE TECH Heater fan (also Air-con fan) stopped working after being parked up for a week.
I took it to Guy Salmon Land Rover Wakefield where they had it for 6 hours and then told me that they had only done a temp repair.
They said the temp repair would only last about 2 weeks so have planned it back on Thursday 29/11 for the dash removing and a new fan fitting.
It's an approved used car so under warranty.

Same problem with our 2016 DS. Tried the tip mentioned above and it worked a treat!

2 points to add though. The panel you need to remove is the one held by 5 plastic screw clips on the passenger side of the engine bay, close to the windscreen, as mentioned. When you shine the torch into the exposed workings, the fan is not easy to see. However you can just see a few of the white fins and it is these that you need to release with a gentle prod of your stick. You will feel them spin free if the fan is seized.

Be sure you haven't got the ignition on, otherwise there is every chance the fan will continue spinning when you give it a prod with your stick!

Many thanks to those who answered the OP with this fix.

Hi, I am experiencing the same problem with my heater fan stalling, with one exception. Occasionally, when the heater motor does run, only cold air comes from the heater ducts! Yesterday it there was no fan running, today the fan ran but no hot air..... any ideas please. Thanks, Mike

This is an image off Google because we have now sold our DS.

The flap is on the RHS and the circle shows roughly where the fan is behind the dashboard.

Thank you for all the instructions re discovery sport heater helped a garage mechanic and myself get fan going again they were stumped and i was certainly not going to go to a land rover garage to be told i needed a new unit it is the second time it has happened LA got it going last time but it is disgraceful that new cars of this value have to have a metal coat hanger poked around /in to get a fan going Still
Saved wasting money with Land rover ! No

Yep, left my 18 plate DS parked up for two weeks whilst on holiday. Blower not working when I returned. A quick poke of the fan with a stick and it's working again smile Happy it was a quick and easy fix, but not happy it was required.

Hi

I have just experienced the same problem with my DS and have spent some time looking under the flap and having taken the battery cover off trying to find the blower fan. I even have a small inspection camera connected to my laptop but I cannot find the damn thing. Iooking at the picture posted it looks as though it is from a LHD [mine is LHD]. Is there any difference between its location in LHD and RHD?

Looking down behind the battery there is a round silver object which I assume is the steering any idea where it is in relation to that?

Best Regards

Nick

Hi Nick

The photo is one off Google because we had already sold our DS before I posted. Ours was a RHD and the fan/flap positions matched those in the photo.

Looking at the DS as shown in the photo, open the flap on the RHS (off-side) and then look diagonally down towards and straight across towards the LHS (near-side) using a torch. You should be able to see the fan blades. Just give them a tap with a long stick while the engine is running and the blades should begin turning.

Alternatively if you are still under LR warranty get them to come out to you and they will show you how to fix it.

Hi Phil

Thanks for that I am still at a loss to find the fan blades I just spent and hour looking with a mini camera and my notebook showing the image. I will probably kick myself when I finally find it.

Just off back to the UK and I might try calling into a Land Rover garage to see if they can show me.

Thank you for your help.

Best Regards

Nick

Hi All

The fan finally restarted after an hours driving.

We had time to spare before our flight from Toulouse so we went to the Land Rover dealership to get a price. The guy on the desk thought it might be the resistance, we insisted it as a known fault with the fan unit. Finally he went off to the workshop and came back with a Brit who said yes it is a known problem subject to a Technical Bullitin , what hope de we have when the service desk have not heard about it?

Finally got a price 5 hrs work to take out the dash and 133 Euros for the fan total cost about 700 Euro, Well winter is coming and we will need it so I am going to book it in.

Thanks

Nick

Hi, I am so grateful for this post! Just hopped into my wife DS (68 plate HSE) and realised after a couple of minutes that no air was flowing through the vents.
Car had been parked up for a good week as per other posts. After reading the advice, I found the fan, hunted around for a stick and gave it a poke - voila! The fan is now working. How utterly ridiculous that car that cost £45k + new, requires a poke with a stick - sort this out Land Rover!!

Good work! Now keep the stick in the boot because it’s likely to happen again smile
