So much for the famed reliability of the Disco V8.

After 28k miles the 1st engine snapped the camshaft which delivered large cunks down the engine to knacker the shells.

The 2nd engine blew the head gasket and introduced lots of liquids to each other.

The 3rd engine is now being fitted by the dealer.

11 weeks "off-road" so far (forgive the pun). Good job it's all under warranty!

Jeez, am I pissed off.

Which Disco is this…? The Rover engine one, or the Beemer unit…?

Really sorry to hear that. I suspect I'm tempting fate here, but I've owned 5 Rover V8 engined cars (two of them currently) without any engine trouble at all.

Perhaps yours has come out in sympathy with Longbridge?

Bah, Bloody Land Rover.

Having taken 6 weeks to source the 1st new engine, it's now taken them 2.5 weeks and counting to source the next one.

I told them weeks ago I'd need a hire land rover this weekend. Have they sorted it? Have they fk.

Useless.

Where do people get this idea that landrover fitted BMW units in discoverys? It never did!

Indeed, first Discos were running 3.5 carb'd V8s, then that was updated to the 3.9 EFi engine as fitted to the Range Rover. Then in Disco 3 the Rover V8 was replaced by the Jag unit (which is a 6).

The only LRs to be running the BMW engines are the Range Rover and Freelander I think.

Not quite. There was a Defender for the South African market (not sure if they were built here or SA) with the BMW straight six engine. I've seen one or two here.

(BTW, the engine doesn't quite fit and tends to push the cooling fan into the radiator, with predictable results...)

I wasn't sure about the Defender as there have been so many variations of it for various markets.

Sounds typically Land Rover-esque
