Disco 4 restricted performance and gearbox fault
Discussion
Hi , first post on LR Forum. We are on our third Disco which is a 2010 6 speed auto Disco 4 HSE Diesel. Owned from new.
Land Rover has taken £1500 off us without being able to diagnose why we have had a restricted performance sign with yellow warning triangle. We have had the issue on and off for last few years but as the car drives perfectly have never been that bothered about it. In the end Land Rover said car needs to be driven more which is nonsense. It does 10000 miles a year which is more than enough and has so far covered 73,000 miles.
Move forward 2 years and we are now getting restricted performance sign intermittently and then later we get a gearbox fault yellow warning sign.
Land Rover say they think it needs a transmission control module for circa £3500 fitted.
I've lost faith in their ability to fix their own cars and wonder if car is going into limp mode because of the initial restricted performance fault. Last thing we want is to spend £5,000 in total and the problems still there.
I suppose the question is is there any specialist in the U.K. who can fix an issue like this 100% without chasing their tails? Have no faith in the main dealers. Based in south east but happy to travel.
Thanks in advance

Get it plugged in at your local LR Indy. A cheap code reader will NOT give you the depth of result you need to be able to accurately diagnose your fault !
Whereabouts in the country are you ?
Roy
Hi Roy based in Hertfordshire. Not had much luck with local Indys around here which is surprising as every second car around her is a LR. Tried G&G in Ware and they're okay ish but have no more confidence in them than the LR main dealer. By way of example they want to buy the the TCM direct from LR for £1600 when I know you can get it from ZF direct for less than half that price. MRH in Hertford seems to have shut down. All of them are pleasant enough but I struggle to follow their logic. LR will just keep on replacing parts till its fixed - the issue with that is I'll probably need a new engine and gearbox to fix the thing in the end! Whereabouts in the country are you ?

Had the same car, same fault, needed new gearbox module (mechatronic unit). Took a look no time to get diagnosed and rectified.
Luckily had a warranty on it, cost was £2300.
Cheers good to know. At the moment car seems to be driving perfectly again. Going to use it for a few more days before sending it to a LR gearbox specialist. https://www.rangerovergearbox.co.ukLuckily had a warranty on it, cost was £2300.
They can buy the TCM direct from ZF and have it fitted for £1500. If I'd sent it to them in first place car would have already been fixed. Welwyn LR very average. Ordered a new Range Rover LWB Autobiography SVR in black with cream leather. Had to wait 12 months and it turns up with a choc brown interior! As I said unbelievably average service from Welwyn LR then salesman has cheek to say I didn't check final order form properly which he messed up when filling in! Slowly tore a strip off him

In these cars it could be something as obscure as a faulty brake peddle switch!!
M
Does the fault clear and the car run normally if you switch odd then restart?M
If it does then faults when you press the brake paddle this could be it. Just clean the contacts in the switch. If not keep looking. Leo said to be a brake light bulb out.

Try Harris Mayes County Cars in Rickmaworth (10mins from J18, M25). They have the latest diagnostics and they are very good. It's not a plush place, but they know their stuff. If yu are getting the box re-built, then Bristol transmissions is a good source and they supply a lot of independent dealers across the country. bakerstreet said:

Disco booked in for Monday - seem like really good guys on the phone - lets see if they can resolve the issues.Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
