What engine should I put in my S3?

The 2.25 diesel engine in my S3 is smoking and will not get through too many more MOT's ......I 'd like to replace it - anyone any ideas about a good replacement..???

I'm not fussy about "keeping it british" etc

so

* no more 2.25 diesel - too slow and too gutless!
* is the later 2.5 diesel any good?
* what about the perkins prima (from the montego) - is it as good as people seem to say on other websites??
* any other reasonable turbo diesel engines about that don't cost "too" much!

V8 - Lifes to short to worry about Mpg. just think of the noise...

The Montego turbo diesel is a good engine if you get one that has not been thrashed to death. Try to buy the whole vehicle if you can cos there's lots of bits you might want to use in the conversion. I did mine a year or so ago and its brills, 33 mpg and faster than the 2.25. My engine came out of a meastro so there is another source for an engine. The whole conversion took 24 hours total on my own(in a garage).

Remember, it may break allot of half shafts and possibly diffs, so try to find range rover axels! then you are sorted.
